Question about Extractors/Ejectors
« on: May 04, 2008, 02:53:51 PM »
I have a few Hand-Rifles, a couple in rimless (.308W & .30-06) and several in rimmed chamberings (.30-30, .357 Mag, .44 Mag, & .45-70).  When you open the action to remove a fired case, as it pops open, on all of my barrels the fired case ejects way out over my right shoulder like a shotgun.

I was doing rangemaster duty at my rifle range yesterday, and there was a shooter who had a Handi-Rifle with two barrels, one a .223 Rem. and the other a .243W.  Both of these barrels would extract, but not eject.  The shooter had to pull the fired case out of the chamber by hand.

What's the deal on whether extractors or ejectors are installed in these barrels?  Is it a choice, an option?  Luck of the draw, what?  The shooter I talked to said his barrels were only weeks old.  Is date of production a deciding factor?

Thanks.

H&R / NEF started to switch over to all extractors about 2 years , so all the new barrels are being made that way . There are still some of the slower selling barrels still out there with ejectors though .

Check the FAQ's at the top of the page for more info .

I think H&R made the right choice. I'm not fond of searching for my brass in the dirt and the grass when I can easily pull it out and pocket it.

gschwertley, many, actually most of the members here bemoan the loss of ejectors on barrels. The extractors are fine for bench rest shooters and some here accept them but most hunters and shooters still want the more desirable ejectors. An ejector can easily and cheaply (either temporarily or more permanently) be changed into an extractor only however not so easily nor cheaply done with an extractor to ejector conversion. You are among the great majority buddy....<><....:)

Personally I wouldn't want one with an ejector. Extractors work just fine even for hunters.

I love the extractors it seems to me that  the extractors are stronger then the ejectors as you no longer have to worry about empty brass being stuck in the chamber. I think this is the main reason that H&R switched , they were getting to many complaints about shells not ejecting . Especially with hot loads or military brass, you no longer need to take along a ram rod to the range.
