Dog Town Bullets
« on: April 28, 2008, 09:44:10 AM »
I saw these bullets mentioned in another thread and did not want to hijack it.  I have heard mixed reviews on these.  The only consistent good comment was price.  How is the shooting in the Handy's?  I have lots of .22, .204, and .17 cals that I would like to find cheaper (read less expensive) bullets, as long as they are potentially shooters.  A buddy and I make a 52 grain HP bullet with 22 rf jackets and they work ok in the hornet and .223 up to about 2800 fps.

Are the Dog Town bullets worthy of spending time trying to work up accuracy loads?  Or are they just plinking bullets?  Save my money for Noslers and Sierras?

The early reports I saw on the .224"s were bad really bad. Lately most all the reports I've seen however seem to be quite good. I assume that means the manufacturer cleaned up their act and are now making some pretty good bullets for fairly cheap prices. I've not used any myself but have noted a change to good reports from the formerly poor reports of their accuracy.

I have nothing but good to say about them in the 204 34gr . I was gonna maybe check out the 224 will have to do a little research now with what GB say's on mixed reviews some times ya got to filter thru some of the comments and attitudes some guys put out there though. But I have started on the second box of 500 with the 204. I thought I had read some where that Mid south a (site sponsor) has availible what appears to be the same bullet as Midways D Town. Kurt

I have only fired 37 of them, considering I did no load development and the rifle I shot them in is a very small light gun, I would say they are as good as anything around.  Larry

I was not aware they made a .223 bullet - must be for older Hornets. I have used the .224's. 55 gr. with an average 1 moa success. The reports on the 204 Ruger bullets from friends have been positive and the price is good.

A friend of  mine recommended the 55 gr  Dogtown SP to me for my .223 Remington.  I tested them with Varget and shot 1.25" groups.  I was quite pleased.  I think my rifle is going to shoot a touch better with 50gr. Hornady SP's.  But the Dogtowns actually shoot more accurately than a Hornady of the same weight in my gun.

Just got the May flyer from Midway, they have the Dogtown bullets on sale.  It's on the internet site as well.

midsouth's picture of their bullet looks like an abrupt ogive change to the bearing surface of the bullet, as in Hornady's secant ogive.    that makes me think the varmint bullet at midsouth in 55 gr' variant is the equivalent of the 55 gr' spire point in .224" diameter.   it is a great deer bullet at reasonable range out of a .223 or something faster.    i've seen the spire points work!

the midway usa picture doesn't look like a hornady bullet.   i'd buy from midsouth.

The .204s at Midway and Midsouth appear to be the same bullet - and both were actually made by Nosler (the SHOTS bullets).  Nosler supposedly also makes some, if not all, of the .224s and now even the .172s for both companies.

Now my question:  has anyone tried the 34gr .224s that they both have started listing?  Just wondering how well they shoot..

I've also heard that Midway's and Midsouth's 34 grain 204 bullets appeared to be the same and made by Nosler. The only difference was the packaging. I'm only talking about 20 cal here. Midsouth has had their 500 count box on backorder for over 2 months and aparently can't give an expected date when they will be in. Midway has pushed back the "expected to be in date" for their 500 count box twice now. You can still get them in 100 round boxes however. Must be difficult to get. Might have something to do with the whole commodity thing. Dave

I have never bought the .204 500ct packs from Midway (only the 100s that come in those nice little cardboard boxes), so I can't speak to their packaging for the 500ct.  The 500ct pack from Midsouth was simply a long thick plastic bag filled with those little rascals (I bought 4 of them a few months back) - I didn't get the nice larger cardboard boxes like they put their bagged 500ct .224s in.  :-\

Maybe one day I'll get to load some of those little pills up and see how they shoot...  :-[
