Results on the cougar killed in the Chicago area confirms through medical examination that it was a wild creature and not a pet released.  Further, it has been linked through DNA with cougar scat found in southern Wisconsin, indicating it has been migrating or moving over a really large range.

It really is an amazing occurrence.  Granted, there were some reports of sightings, but that is one heck of a lot of urbanization to go through to get into Chicago, from wherever it originally came from.

The scat sample was taken a couple of miles from where I work and had been sighted several times thru the winter in this area . My theory is it was pushed all the way down from N WI by the deer hunters then pushed more by local dogs as it got into the more populated south. Kurt

I live in NE Kansas.  I saw one cross the road 2 years ago.  I know what a cougar looks like, I lived in Nevada many years.  I have also seen tracks along stream beads, like I said I have seen them before.
Last week I was listening to local PBS station in Kansas city and numerous people reported seeing them, mostly farmers, so I have no doubt they are in Illinois.
They follow the deer, and there is an explosion of deer population around here.

Wolves are illegal to shoot because of Federal Laws, not because IL does not have a season on them.

Cougars are legal to shoot in IL as they are not protected by Wildlife Code and there are Federal protections for cougars.

The CPOs that looked at the New Boston cat thought it was wild from the start, after examing it.  Now officials in the HQ, that can make press releases, that was a different slow story.  Which they did(two weeks later) it was believed to be a wild cat.  Marion cat killed on tracks was also confirmed as a wild cat.
