22 Hornet or 30-30?
« on: April 16, 2008, 12:10:13 PM »
I am taking some scrap steel/copper/brass/aluminum to the yard tomorrow.  It will be enough to purchase a Handi from the local shop who sells them for $210 plus tax.  I am eyeing the hornet mostly because it would make a nice farm rifle, for woodchucks, possums, raccoons, whatever.  My plan would be to purchase the rifle, send it in right away for 45 colt and maybe a 44 magnum barrel.  Either or frame should work for what I really want the 45lc.

Anyone have an opinion on either?  I reload and cast so I have an endless supply of ammo at my finger tips.

The 30-30 especially if you reload. Way more versatile.

I've got a 22 hornet & like it very much, but if I didn't reload, I'd stay away from it due to high factory ammo costs - I'd get a .223 instead.

Or jump all over the 30-30.

Plus a bunch for the 30-30, great caliber and more flexible than the 22 Hornet.   Doug

I have a different take on it. I'm sure the 30-30 will be available for quite some time. The Handi Hornet on the other hand has already been discontinued. I know the accessory barrel is still available now but who knows after the consolidation ???. I have two Handi Hornets and both shoot excellent. I'd get the Hornet and THEN buy the 30-30 accessory barrel ;).

I have a 22 hornet barrel fitted to my frame. I will say that the 22 hornet is used more than any other gun I own. Maybe as much as all the others put together. I do not own a 30-30 barrel for mine but cannot see it as getting much use in the area that I live.

I guess it would help me to look at who is making the post, instead of just giving my general response - and read all of it.  After seeing "dk17hmr", after I came back to this post - I'd say, of course get the 22 hornet.

I know you'll be tinkering on it like I do - anybody that could have that much fun with a 32-20 savage, will love the hornet.  In fact if you can't find one, send it in for the barrel after buying whatever caliber, order a 225438 and have some real fun.  I just started playing with the 22 bator, but haven't played with it enough yet.

And you'll need that 30-30 barrel as well, the 311407, 311041, Lee 311TL155C/Lee311C160 will all work with them.
