New pup?
« on: April 02, 2008, 03:54:04 AM »
My youngest daughter gave me a female German Shorthaired pointer for an early fathers day gift. I work with this pup as much as time allows. She's house broke now and wasn't hard to get her trained to do this.
When in the field, about what age should she begin to take interest in the smell of birds? I bought  a bottle of pheasant scent up at Gander Mountain but after applying it to a retrieving dummy, she doesn't take much interest? Still too young? She shows signs of being very intelligent, not just my opinion but, the vet thinks so also. She's very alert and responds to her name readily. Am I just too impatient?

I have a pointer/border collie, and yes they are very intelligent dogs! I don't bird hunt with him but on his own he will point and flush out birds. I always praise him when he does it though. Pointers are very willing to please, they just have to figure out exactly what you want first. You might want to start out with a dog toy that she likes and then work up to the dummy. If she looks at it as a game then she will maintain interest longer.
