Airforce Airgun Question for Butcher45
« on: April 06, 2008, 08:59:43 AM »
Butcher,

I saw your post on your 25 cal. condor.  I was thinking about getting a talon SS (probably a .22).  I was wondering if you could give any insight into the airforce guns for someone looking to get one for the first time (I have a beeman 22 spinger).  Also I do cast bullets and was wondering how cast bullets compare to the standard pellets.  I think that I remember you were doing some testing in your 45 with verals molds.  Have you done much experimenting in 22's.  . Thank you for your time.

Chris

One last thing did you have to have the 25 barrel custom made or is airforce having 25 caliber barrels made.  Sorry for the barrage of questions.

All are welcome to comment.  I singled out Butcher because I saw that he had a similar gun.

Well these Airforce guns are pretty neat if you are into modifying and tinkering them to get them where you want it.  I bought mine as a .22 in a package deal I could not refuse because it included a Hill Pump and scuba tank for practically free, along with a pellet sampler pack from Straight Shooters. I then added the .25 kit from Custombrakz.com which I am currently getting dialed in.

If you are just wanting a trouble-free, out of the box powerhouse with the added plus of being a lever action repeater, I highly suggest you go with a Sumatra 2500 Carbine in .22 or .25 (I say get the .25).  That is what my next small bore will be.  You can get one from Pyramid Air for about $407 which is a great deal for that gun.  Or you can get one from Mac1 that has been given the once-over by a second or third generation airgun tuner.  Those Sumatra's are known to be awesome right out of the box and accurate, though they tend to require Korean pellets to be real accurate.  Korean guns tend to have slightly over-sized barrel diameters from what I have gathered.

The Airforce guns have some issues you may need to deal with, such as requiring high scope mounts to avoid tilting your head side-ways, and frame flex throwing off POI (I'm told a tri-rail fixes this).  I'm told the valve issue it once had has finally been fixed by the company.  The safety is crap; I'm going to remove mine as soon as I get the proper instructions I need.  I also need to get a different butt pad and some kind of cheek piece, as it is difficult to get the same cheek/shoulder position on the rifle each time.

If you like to soup-up/modify your gun, or want to learn just what makes an airgun tick, Airforce guns are great for that and can be very accurate, powerful guns when they are all dialed in.  I'm keeping mine!

I apologize; I just realized I didn't answer some of your questions.

I have not done any type of extensive testing with .22.  I shot it in .22 for awhile and soon realized that this gun (the Condor) really should have been put out as a .25, especially after seeing hunting clips of the .25 conversions' capability on small game!

As far as the .45 stuff yes I have done many limited tests using a whole bunch of designs.  As of yet, I have not had the opportunity to test any of Verals designs and that is soon changing for both the .25 and .45.   Oh and the standard pellet for .45 is pretty much the  roundball as the pellet makers do not offer a .45 pellet to my knowledge.

Butcher,

Thanks for the lengthy reply.  I really like the idea of a repeater.  Part of the reason that I was looking at the talon was that it is supposed to be quieter.  Are barrel shrouds available for the Sumatra.

I didn't realize that you were only regulated to using roundballs in the big bores.  I can see why you are looking to cast some conicals. Good luck

Thanks for all your help.

Chris

Well there are factory pellets made for the 9mm; there might be some made somewhere for the .45 I just haven't seen them.  I say roundball is the standard because the guns seem to shoot them very well once you figure out the right size to shoot in your barrel.

Thanks for all of the help.  I'm not sure which way I will go.  I let you know when I decide.  Good luck with the cast bullets.
