BLR vs BAR
« on: March 04, 2008, 05:26:12 PM »
Which of the two is more accurate?  I'll admit I'm not the world's greatest shot, but I live out West where sometimes you have to shoot from far away.  I know people that use the BAR, but haven't had much contact with the BLR.  Which do you think would be better?

If you took a .308 or 30-06 in a BLR and a Bar, I would think the average shooter like me would have a hard time telling the difference in the rifles.  I can shoot a 1.0" at 100yds with my BLR and I don't think I could do better with either rifle.  The BAR is heavier so might be better from the bench.  I think the quality of both rifles is such that the shooter and his technique is more important that the rifles.
Anyway that's my humble opinion.

I have no experience with the later, alloy receiver guns, but the -70's steel receiver BAR & BLR, I had were about even - with the same sighting equipment (scope-to-scope or peep-to-peep, etc - and not scope-to-peep).

As a matter of fact, they were also as accurate as the boltguns I owned at that time, since they both were front lockers, too.

So which one would be cheaper?  Is the BAR more jam-prone than the BLR?  There can be a bit of sand where I hunt (the Utah desert.)

Last time I checked the zero on my BAR, it was shooting a 1 3/4 inch group at 200 yards with my handloads at the Owl's Hollow Range. But as far as the BAR being more accurate than the BLR, I've never shot a BLR before. I do know that the BAR will shoot just as accurate as most any bolt action rifles will. I tend to shoot smaller groups when checking my rifles due to the training I received while in the military. They taught me well on how to shoot and it has been a great help later on in my hunting. One thing I don't like about the BAR is it is a heavy rifle and tires me out pretty fast if I do much walking when hunting with it. So I usually only carry it when I plan on staying in one place and shooting long shots.

Hunting from the Bluff with my old Browning BAR 270 caliber.

Having owned 3 BARs and about 15 BLRs over the years I believe the BAR to be more accurate. Either is certainlly accurate enought for hunting.

The BLR will be less finicaty about reliability IME. Regards, Byron
