ATI telescopic buttstock
« on: August 06, 2008, 05:23:05 PM »
Has anyone had experience with the ATI telescopic buttstock?  It's usually shown with a chopped barrel with a fake muzzle brake on a shotgun, but their literature states it'll fit SB1 & SB2 frames.   A buddy on mine brought a .17 HMR sportster and mounted one a while back and he griped about the cheekpiece being too low with a scope mounted.  I ordered a Choate thumbhole like the factory unit, with a raised cheekpiece (which I found I didn't need) for my HMR that seems to work OK since I got some better glass on it.  I have since acquired a .22 MAG Ultra model and was considering mounting the fore end and telescoping stock on that.   (More of a just-because-I-can idea.  Something about a single shot tactical rimfire.???).  Besides I have a project in mind for the lami wood stock it came with.   Or maybe try it on the HM2,
Will that bow kill an elk?     Sure.....but arrows are much more effective.

I recently put one on a .22LR sportster. It seems fine to me, however I haven't had a chance to even get the rifle sighted in yet. The stock fit fine, but I had to add some washers on the bolt to get it to tighten up enough. I would be glad to answer any questions that I can for you.

Just curious as to how the comb height worked with a scope on board.  Have handled the parts but haven't had the opportunity to see how the assembled unit felt.   I trial fitted the fore end and you obviously need to use the included fore end screw, as the replacement foreend is taller that the Sportster version.  Looks like it will work, and I want to mount a different butt stock unit to the mount tube.  Probably over the top for a Handi rimfire, but that is half the fun.  How does the shorter fore end work?    Just looking for some feedback from someone who has mounted the ATI units.

The comp height is a little low. However, I don't find it an issue. I guess instead of letting the stock ride on your cheek bone, it more rides on the jaw bone.

The washers that I refer to is for the stock, not the forearm. The bolt hole in the stock was not edged enough, therefore the stock would not stay tight.

I did install the forearm, however didn't like it. It is shorter, but it is really fat. I like the M4 style handguards for AR's. But they didn't look right on a slim line .22LR. So mine has the adjustable stock (with an M4 AR grip that I replaced because the ATI was too short for my hand) and the sportser forearm. It seems that the angle of the pistol grip is not vertical enough with the standard grip and I might replace it with another type.

I think that you could swap the adjustable stock, however the tube is NOT as durable as and AR tube. I did take the sliding stock off and applied some tape to snug up the fit and reduce the play.

IMHO just stick w/ the stock options that chote and NEF offer.  I've put ATI stocks on 3 different firearms.  Unless I just was unlucky, I had 3 stocks that I had to modify extensively in order to make them fit.  The SKS handguard was extremely loose, not too big a deal, my hi-point stock, I had to re-drill the bolt holes for the reciver, and the ATI adj. stock I got for my Rossi, the forearms wouldn't fit without re-drilling the swivel stud/forearm bolt hole... All 3 were overly heavy, and poorly finished.  I've dealt w/ other aftermarket stock mfg, before i.e H.S. precision and Bell & Carlson and both bolted right up w/o any mods.
I'm voting 3rd party in this election by writing in Jesus Christ for president.  Sadly even if this were an option most of you would still vote Republican because "It's a two party system."
