7600 red dot
« on: April 03, 2008, 02:26:29 PM »
Bought a Burris Fast Fire for my 7600 last week.  This thing should be the real deal for stillhunting and fast shooting.  I had an Eotech dot on it before, but it was very bulky and kept your head up off the cheekpiece too high...  This keeps you right down, aiming on one plane with both eyes open, no slight refocus of the eyes when you have to acquire a target through a peep sight.  Shot well at the range the other day and know I can get even more out of it.  Looking forward to patrolling the swamps of Maine next November with this little setup.....

Anywhere from $175-200, depending on where you find them.  Superfast on target, that's for sure.  The dot appears to cover less area on the target than a Williams type Firesight small bead at the same range, and stands out better too.

The only potential problem I see is snow/rain collecting in around the site causing your view to be obstructed.

My guess is it will require the same amount of attention in crappy weather as a scope.  When I'm hunting I usually carry a small rag in my right hand jacket pocket while I cradle the gun in my left arm.  When I stop while still hunting I just ease the rag slowly out of my pocket while I look around for deer and slowly wipe the lenses.....should be about the same with this little sight...easier probably.  Also, I just bought a chamois rag at an auto parts store to carry in my pocket....says they are super absorbent, so we'll see how it does...     DL

That's why I opted for a William's peep and firesight for my "foul weather" 760. If it requires the same attention as a scope, why bother? Keeping the scope clean on the 7600 is the pain I wanted to avoid. Your scope on low mag is probably just as fast as that new sight, plus you have the option to crank it up if/when you need it.

Of course, I do understand the need to buy something new now and again, but who are you trying to kid here DL?  ;)

I don't do peep sights, and this sight, as was the Eotech, is much faster on target than a scope at low power.  It's like snapping your head up and looking out the sliding glass door to your deck....as fast as a single bead on the end of your shotgun barrel.  It's lighter than a scope and has much less glass area to keep clean.

Whatever works for you... I had the heavy duplex reticule installed in my Leupold Vari-X III before they offered that scope in a "Dangerous Game" version. For me, at 1.5X is is just as fast as looking out my sliding door. It's the same with my peep as well; the trick with the peep is you have to unscrew the aperture and just use the threaded hole to sight through.

I have had a few guns with peeps...my 742 as a kid, a couple 7600's, a 94 lever.  I don't think I've ever looked through any of them with the aperture in the sight.  There is a transition in the focus of your eye when you put the gun up...first you find the peep, then the bead, then the animal, then the sight kinda disappear.  Happens in a second or so, but there is definitely a transition.  Less so with scopes, even less so with dots.  IMO

DLuke, long time no talk!   :(

I've been trying to respond to this, but either my system or the site software keeps deleting my comments.  I'll give it another try tomorrow.

I see a major problem with this set-up. For the deer, that is! A sweet looking rig! Looks super-fast and accurate.
