another Handi question
« on: January 19, 2008, 11:03:44 PM »
Morning folks!
Yesterday I was looking at the difference in the new 3030 Handy and the 7/08 Handy that I bought my grandson a few years ago.
When I took the forearm off the 7/08 I noticed that the barrel seems to be a little loose without the forearm.
Is this Normal? I took the forearm off the new 3030 and it does not have this slack.
The 7/08 has probably been shot maybe 100 times.
Ive looked in the FAQs but haven't seen any topics on this, any input appreciated.

By loose do you mean up & down or side to side ? Look in the FAQs under barrel fitting , it will explain some of the fixes for loose barrel lock-up .

Stimpy I just pulled the forearm back off to check and its more of a side to side movement, I fixing to look under the forearm fitting to see if I can find it.

Thanks

If you take the forearm off and close up/lock up the barrel, does it still have side to side play? Or is it when you break open the action? Many barrels will have a little side to side play when the forearm is off and the action is opened up. But it shouldn't when it's locked up.

Myarmor
Its loose with it locked up.
It definitely is going to have something done to it.
Ive looked at the barrel fixes and I don't know if I'm up to that task, Ill have to find someone capable.
The good luck I had yesterday with finding the 3030 left this morning LOL!

Thanks

Try this , cut you a small peice of pop can just big enough to fit in the pivot point of the under lug and then check the lock-up and side to side play , granted this is just a temp fix and the rifle should go back to the factory for repair , the down side is that they may put a new extractor barrel on instead of an ejector barrel .

I went on and done it Stimpy and it locked it up.
If its no adverse affect on it the shim might have to stay.
Is there anything to worry about other than knowing that it there?
Thanks

Pop can shims will eventually hammer out and the barrel will be loose again, they don't stay put all the time either. The best choice is send it to H&R for repair/replacement.... and possibly some more barrels and a free trigger job if it needs it.  ;D

Thanks Tim,
Ill call them tomorrow and see what they have to say.
Ive had the rifle for probably 3 years  and it hasn't been shot that much.
I wonder why it done this so soon? of course it could have been this way all along and I just didn't notice it.
Any way It belongs to my grandson and I wouldn't want him to have it if something is wrong with it, Ill get it fixed one way or the other.
Again thanks for all the knowledge and help.
This is a great forum

Most likely when it was fitted, there was a burr on the pivot and it wore off, that or something like it has happened before, the forend masks the looseness. A little loose isn't unsafe, but accuracy can suffer,  a slight looseness can even shoot good sometimes, it just depends on how much and if the barrel is in the same position each time, but it's best to get it fixed. They'll likely replace the barrel, which like Stimpy said, wiil be an extractor barrel. Be sure to ask them to cover shipping, and ask for the trigger job in writing on a tag attached to the rifle so the gunsmith is sure to see it, if you want one. ;)
