Garand not ejectinh shell
« on: June 21, 2003, 11:19:29 AM »
I was shooting my garand today with surplus ammo LC 61 when 3 times out of five clips a shell failed to extract.  The rim of the shell was torn and pulled backwards by the ejector ripping out off it.  The shells were all easily pushed out by a brass cleaning rod from the muzzle.  just letting the weight of the rod falling about 3 inches would push them out.  The chamber does not look rough.  I later noticed 2 unfired shells with what looks like a thin rim on about a quater of the rim.  Any ideas?

Mike357, try Battlerifles.com in the Garand section. There's a wealth of info there, as well as a nice faq section.

Rip that head off

Mike357 - hay pal, you're shooting ammunition that may be over 40 years old.  Some of those rims might well be thin or you just might have a crummy batch of ammo.  There's nothing to say that just because the headstamp is from Lake City it is the best there ever was.

If you can drop the empty case out with a dropped cleaning rod then one of two situations may be suspect (1) crummy or old ammo with thin rims that your extractor just rips the head off or (2) fired cases that stick in the chamber due to higher pressures (for whatever reason) and the extractor just rips the head off - you can drop them out with the cleaning rod because in the time it takes to put the rod down and drop the case, it has cooled enough to take some of the pressure off.

I would try some newer ammo first before I do anything else.  Also, see if you can e-check with the Lake City Arsenal to see if they had a recall out for any of those lots of ammo.  Hope this helps.  Mikey.

Go to Jouster.com  M1/M14 board.. Have you cleaned the chamber? Check out the bolt, make sure the exstractor doesn't have a problem. How about the spring? New rifle or has it been setting? Is it locking up tight, bolt turned all the way closed? I'd check the chamber for sure! Clean it real good.. <:)
