Shooting hand loads for the first time
« on: December 28, 2008, 03:58:13 PM »
I have contacted a website that makes custom ammo. Im getting a new rifle in .223. Is there any reason why I shouldnt shoot hand loads through it or trust the person that makes them ? Im looking for some heavy 70 to 75 grain deer hunting loads so if you know of any companies that can do this please give me a name or link.
Thanks

Thanks stimpylu32. I will check them out.
Any reason I shouldnt shoot handloads through a new gun for the break in period or does it matter ?
Please keep giving more names if its ok.

If you want to pay more money, and not get as accurate ammo, stick with factory stuff. Been to hundreds of match's, and nobody ever won with factory ammo. And if you contact a custom reloader, they could taylor a load for you. Find out what your gun like's. The .223 is an inherently accurate cartridge anyhow. So no matter what, unless the gun is somehow messed up, it'll be a shooter.
I'm not sure what .223 your getting, but with the bullet weight you want to use, I would suggest making sure the barrel twist rate is a 1-9 or 1-8. With that weight bullet, the 1-12 twist barrels might not stabilize the bullet. gypsyman

Thanks gypsyman. I will be getting a Stevens which has the 1 in 9 twist. I just wanted to make sure its alright and that its not going to hurt anything by shooting reloads during the rifles break-in period.
