couple 700 LTR questions
« on: December 25, 2007, 01:54:54 PM »
Has anyone shot much offhand with this 20" bbl model; I am curious about the balance of the rifle.

12" twist is going to stabilize 180gr OK right?

Thanks

This is the second time I've seen a question about a Remington 700 LTR. What the heck is an LTR? That designation rings no bells with me for some reason I just can't place it.

The LTR means "Light Tactical Rifle".  The one I had balanced great.  I really liked everything about the rifle, except when I shot it.  Shot like a dog.  2" groups from a tactical rifle at 100 yds?  With match ammo?   Umm, something ain't right....     An $800 factory gun should shoot better than that.  Bad barrel according to the factory, Remmy gave me all kinds of grief about replacing it.  That's the only problem I've had with their service.  Ended up parting the rifle out to recoup most of my money.  I liked the gun so much that I keep debating getting another one, but I'm afraid of p-ssing my money away again on one.  I really wanted to use it for hunting.  Oh well.  I never shot anything over 168gr in mine.  All I can tell you is to try the 180's, some 1-12 barrels will shoot them, some won't.  The difference between 165gr and 180gr is not worth worrying over if you ask me.

I too have an LTR which can be found on Remington's LE site. I paid about $720 for mine 3 years ago and it is probably the most accurate rifle I own. I find that it being compact with the Rem. Varmint contour barrel is the best of both worlds. It's a great treestand rifle due to it being compact. I load for mine and I have found a load to produce this 3-shot group @ 100 yartds:

The load is:

44.5gr Varget
168gr SMK
Win. Brass
CCI BR2
2.800 OAL

I have also tested RL-15 powder and got some decents groups but not as tight as above. Those groups look like this:

I don't think you'll be disappointed with an LTR if that's the route you decide to go.

Here's a pic of my LTR:
