barrell fit and reciever questions
« on: January 07, 2008, 09:01:48 AM »
Ok, I own a NEF 22 Hornet and have a set of camo stocks coming.  I also have a H&R 20 guage topper with stainless receiver.  I read in the F&Q's that rifle barrel's can not be fitted to shotgun receivers cause of the metal not being heat treated, but what about a stainless receiver.  I would like to put the hornet barrel on the stainless receiver with my laminate stocks,.... and can a barrel just fit, without any work, cause I put it on the stainless receiver and it seemed to fit perfect.

The receiver isn't stainless, it's nickel plated, it's also still an SB1 frame, see the FAQs on the topic, the pic of the 4 frames shows a 2003 Topper frame like yours, it's a lot different than an SB2 frame, so to answer your question, no.

Tim, what pressure does a .22 Hornet operate at? I know no one should ever shoot a rifle barrel on a shotgun frame, but that notwithstanding isn't the .22 Hornet a relatively low pressure load? I know of a person that was shooting his 45-70 barrel on one of his shotgun receivers until I told him he should not do it, he had been doing it for a long time!!! That was just a bomb waiting to go off!!!....<><....:)

It's considered one of the low pressure rounds even though it's not necessarily rated at low pressure, but it has a small case head which reduces thrust, the SAAMI MAP is 43kcup.

Just an FYI, with H&R apparently offering the 357mag and 44mag rifles on factory fitted SB1 frames this year, they may be considering changing their position on using pistol cailiber barrels on SB1 frames, so if and when the do that, we may be able to get those barrels fitted to some of our late model SB1 frames thru the accessory barrel program which means we may do the same at home, depending on their criteria for barrel fitting.

Stay tuned, they haven't decided to do that yet, it may or may not happen I've already asked, will let ya know after they make a decision, and the they is H&R/Marlin/Remington.  ;)
