Peep sights and front sights?
« on: January 07, 2008, 08:07:43 AM »
I just bought a hunting peep sight from 44man and put it on my older .44 mag.  Leaving the rear sight in place, which was sighted in, let me know that the front is too short.  Centering the peep shows the front sight well above the rear.  A call to NEF told me there are three different heigths that she called .44 (short), .30-30 (medium) and .22 hornet (tall).

My question to you guys who have used the Williams peep is;  Do I get the medium or do I need to get the tall?  I just want to be able to sight it in.  Thanks in advance.

See the Peep and Firesights link in the FAQs, there's  sight height calculation info  that you can use to determine height. FWIW, the 44mag takes the same sight as the 45-70, #R03871, the sight that came on my 44mag barrel is .465" tall.

I suggest getting a medium and a tall, the shipping is the same and you will never really know where your gun is going to POI on the target until you shoot it, besides it's always nice to have spare parts rattling around on the workbench, you never know when they may come in handy (Handi!!)....<><....:)

I wouldn't order either one!! :o ;D The WGRS aperture sight works better for my old eyes with a Firesight, I've tried straight blade sights with peep sights before, they work fine in good light, but for a hunting sight, nothing beats fiber optics, the combo listed in the FAQs works extremely well on my 45-70 at the range as well as hunting, I have them on all of my muzzleloaders since scopes are illegal here for muzzleloader season. ;)

I will probably do what MSP Ret said.  The price is really cheap and if the postage wouldn't change I will do that then check outTim's Firesight if I have trouble in dim light.  Either way I will look at the firesight some more tonight before ordering anything.  Thanks to all for the inputs.  Being in Louisiana I'm kinda tied up with the BCS Ballgame between LSU and Ohio State at the moment.

For the WGRS peep sight on the 45-70 in the Peep and Firesight link in the FAQs, the 5th and 6th links down show the ramp and insert that I used. ;)

Good game BTW (After the opening kick-off anyway).  As in Tim's post the part number for the rear peep is RO3019 and the cost is $18.95.  I got mine used from 44Man on this forum and is in like new condition.  Cannot tell you the part number for the front since I'm still deciding which one to get.
