Rem 700 question
« on: January 14, 2008, 09:25:33 AM »
I have a late 60s vintage Rem 700 ADL 30-06. What is the correct procedure for tightening the 2 screws that hold the action/barrel to the stock?

I have owned many, many M700's over the years and do not know of any torque values for the screws but I have always been told to loosen the wrist screw first and tighten it last. This is to avoid undue stress on the thinnest part of the stock.
In practice, I tighten them down firmly with a proper screw driver(s) without trying to gorilla them down.

By "wrist" screw I assume you mean the one that's farthest toward the butt, near by the trigger guard. Izatso?

Synthetic & wood stocks should be hand tight, which is 30 to no more than 35 inch pounds. The Sendero & Police stocks are tightened to 45 inch pounds from the factory. -(out of remington's website.)-

This is the tool I use to torque down the action screws....called the Wheeler Engineering( FAT) Torque Wrench Screwdriver

I put one of my 700's in a HS Prescision stock...and they said to tighten the action screws on it at 65 inch pounds....

Yes, the part you hold with your "trigger finger" hand.

Thanks for the info. For the sake of accuracy and consistency I just want to make sure I do it the right way, and the same way, each time. Wrist screw (closest to the butt) gets tightened last, and loosened first.
