Freebore and the best "bullet jump" for a handy ultra 223
« on: December 26, 2007, 06:23:37 AM »
Doing my own research  ???.  I have had good success 7/8" using 50 gr sierra over 27gr Varget and 1" groups using 50 grv-Max over 23gr N133.  BUT with both of these loads it's hit and miss.  Those were best groups and most of the time it's around 1.5"   I was on a search for a bullet that would reach the lands and overcome the long "freebore" that is common on the Handy Ultra 223.  I have found that bullet and was wondering, before i waste hundreds of rounds, if any of you "handy experts" have found what the perfect bullet jump measurement is?

I'll start with .008 has no significant promise.

Just tried .010 from the ogive to the lands still at 1.5" groups
Also tried .015 from the ovige to the lands still at 1.5" groups

i've heard messages that some shooters are getting consistant .5" groups.  I'm in disbelief, I think I would have to see that.

On my gun, the trigger has been worked and barrel is floated (washer technique) [/b]

Welcome! Use the recommended COL for the bullet you're loading and you'll be fine, there's no way to reach the lands with any bullet that will shoot well in most H&R 223s.
