Wow. If I had scenery like that around here my wife wouldn't see me until school started back up again in August. Oh, the gun looks great, too!

Wisconsin is really beautiful this year, for some reason. It's normally pretty, but this year it's REALLY pretty...maybe el niƱo.
Of course, living in Tennessee, if you aren't looking at nice scenery, it's your own fault.

I'm in West Tennessee on the muddy (yucky) Mississippi. Delta bean and cotton fields. All the pretty stuff is in the Cumberland Plateau (middle) and Smokeys (east).

pj:  everybody was complimenting the scenery behind that great looking new toy you have there but nobody has said how great lookin' it is.  That is a nice toy.  I can really appreciate the stocks on it, they look fabulous.  But in that caliber I would have to ask you how long it took you to unhook from the caisson you would need to stabalize it for shooting.  I would rather touch it off like a cannon than to have to eat the bottle of aspirin for my wrist after firing it.  Mikey.

Pj,
Nice toy.  Have you chronographed your loads to see what the advantage is over a 30-06? I'm just curious to see what the gain is for all the extra powder in the shorter, than magnum rifle, length barrel.  I shoot a XP-100 in .284 winchester, about like a .280 Remington, and thought anything more would give me little if any gain in the 15" barrel.

Yep,here is the run down....

06'
130's=2561
150's=2500
180's=2422
200's=2246
-------------------------
300mag
130's=3012
150's=2818
180's=2686...*Note*Factory Rem Core-locks went 2720fps
200's=2473...*Note* Hold on to this one it hurts
-------------------------
I have also chrono'd some 165's but I'm working on the load so far its been 2702fps with a MAX velocity spred of only 12fps.The same load out of my Dads 300mag rifle is 3000fps that only 300fps +/- slower than his rifle.

PJ,
those are pretty impressive gains, I wouldn't have thought the increase would be so great.  Are the 30-06 velocities from factory ammo, or ammo tailored to pistol length barrels?  I'm suprised the '06 doesn't perform better than that.

The '06 was loaded to MAX.The 300mag was loaded with powder space to spare.

PJ,
perhaps the thicker powder column of the Win Mag casing has something to do with the huge gains in velocity.  My .284 Win, which has similar capacity to the '06 will ouperform the velocity numbers you are posting using similar weight bullets.  This is all backward (like me), the larger bore with similar powder capacity should be more efficient when loaded to equal pressures.  Perhaps there is something to this Short Magnum stuff.  I know the PPC and BR cartridges are very efficient in pistols, and it appears that my .284 which is also a short/fat cartridge is more efficient than the long/skinny '06 casing.  Interesting.
