.585 NYATI
« on: August 07, 2007, 04:54:13 PM »
Anyone on here have a .585 Nyati? I am looking to build a Brute, and this one looks like a good candidate, I have looked between the .585 Nyati and the .577 T Rex, the Nyati is a bit more than the T Rex, I figure if I am going to build one I might as well build a big one plus the guy's at benchmark barrels have a reamer for the .585 Nyati. Whats my reason for this rifle one might ask? I have no reason, I just want one.

You might want to contact Ed @ AHR (American Hunting Rifles) in Montana. He is an expert on the big bruisers. They have a 600 Overkill, and a 585 AHR that you might be interested in. Their work is first rate and talking to Ed is fun as he really know what it takes to make this truly big stuff. Plus he has brass & dies in stock and its all trimmed and ready to load, unlike some of the others that are hard to find and of lesser quality. His brass is JI (Jameson Int., formerly Bell Mast)--the good stuff and priced fair. I am going out right now and test their new 600 ok they just finished for me. I can let you know more info if you wish as I have built two 600's in the last few years from different companies.

The 600 Overkill is a wildcat round based on the 505 Gibbs head size with a 3" case with a belt added for headspacing. It will safely drive a 900gr bullet to 2400 +/- fps. My current load does 2040 fps from a 20" barrel using H-4350. This is plenty, believe me.

Unreal!!!!! If I do some basic math, that sounds like approximately 7,000 FPE?

It's actually 8319 Ft lbs. of muzzle energy @ my 2040 fps load.  8). At 2400 fps it's 11,513 ft. lbs :o  Uffda

I don't think its overkill for very dangerous game such as Griz, cape buffalo, etc...

That is a real beauty. How low can the .600 OK be loaded? I would love to shoot some cast bullets at around 1500 fps.

kd,
I already load cast bullets for my 600JDJ and am making a different design right now for the Overkill. The bullet below is an 800gr 90% meplat design I came up with and it shoots great, hits hard and is pretty mild at 1500 fps with 70grs IMR-4198 and pillow fibre wadding. Great plinking & pig load.

Guys,
here's a little video set and some of my latest load work. It the 900gr Woodleigh @ 2040 fps into almost 5' of water. The bullet opened to 1.35"+ and weighs 889grs. If you look closely at the video from my left side, you can see the side panel get blow about 20' off the test box. Now it's time to test on a large old boar  8)

I would like to offer cast bullets for the 600 OK. What is the COL? Or what would be the ideal nose to crimp dimension? What weights would you recommend?

Weight-wise I would think anything from 800-1050grs depending on design. I'm getting a mold for the bolt 600 OK that is much more pointed than this one to feed better. It will be around 850grs and a 30% meplat. I will have to measure them for their length as I can't remember what they are. of course the old standard for the 600's is 900grs. I have tried the Beartooth LBT's that are 1040grs and they are good. They really penetrate but I wanted less recoil for practicing, Good luck and let me know if I can give any information to help.

Here is my latest mold I have coming for the 600 bolt rifle. Hopefully it will shoot as well as the flatter one.

That looks a lot like a long flat nose LBT design. Do you size to .621 or .622? Are gas checks available?

On the last mold I just shot them as-cast from WW dropped into ice water w/o sizing as I can't find a die big enough. They shoot great that way. I lube them by standing them in a pan of melted Alox and then cutting them out with a hollow punch. I have never found gas checks this big either but with the fiber filling I use they don't lead at all.

The 600 OK custom rifle from AHR is sure a beauty. I wonder how low the 600 OK can be loaded. I'd love to get one but would want to shoot it often and not full power loads. I could cast some 500 - 600 grain bullets and maybe load them to 1600 fps. That would be fun shooting.

You sound like me I have no use for my CZ 458 Lott I just recently bought. So anyway I found out that rifle can kill any animal in the world. I thought I would kill an Elephant with it. I thought that was a sound reason for the rifle The CZ American Safari 458 Lott.

I'm sure with the powders available, you can easily load from 1200-2000 fps with 5744 and others for the 600ok. Combined with lighter bullets like you're thinking, recoil would be very low. These would be fun plinking loads. Your 585-750 is a good looking design.

The Biggest is the 700 Nitro Express. It can shoot a 1000spgr bullet at 2000 fps.I think that is awsum.  I own a 458 CZ 550 American Safari lott .  But it doesn't come neer the 700 Nitro with 8900 FT LB of Energy.

Actually, AHR has been bought out by Wayne Jacobson, Ed's partner. He is great to work with. He is making a 700 AHR bolt gun that is supposed to push a .685 diameter out at 2200 ft/sec. Mine is supposed to be ready in about another month. You can push 1000 grain 700 nitro express bullets out at 2300 ft/sec out of a Searcy double, but the gun is not regulated for that hot of a load. I have taken my 600 overkill to 2330ft/sec with a 900 grain bullet with 165 grains of 4350. The recoil is right at 186 ft/lbs, but with the AHR brake attatched, it cuts felt recoil by 1/2. At 95 ft.lbs of recoil, it's not too bad. Ihave a 585 wells magnum, which is basically a 3" 585 nyati with the shoulder of the cartridge moved up 1/4". It will do a 750 grain bullet at 2500 ft/sec with out any problems. The 585 nyati can be a very tricky cartridge to get to feed properly. The 600 overkill has better ballistics and feeds much easier.
