What does the factory use to finish the stocks?
« on: December 04, 2007, 07:29:40 AM »
I am working on a BC that I am re-chambering to 45-120 and I want to smooth the rough edges on the stock ( Schnabel and stock to action). I thought I would strip the stock do the hand sanding work and re-finish with stain and oil. So as not to screw up the checkering I was hoping to use a chemical strip agent. Anyone know if Zip-Strip will work or another agent? Need suggestions.
Thanks  - F50

Zip should work.  Remove wood and if ya have enough put the whole stock and fore end in the stripper....  If not just apply heavy coat. (You may need to repeat this a time or two doing it this way)  When you clean stripper off use only a soft brush on checkered area......

F50,
ofcourse you know, i'm doing the same project however a 45-90..
i was thinking i'd sand the factory stains off by hand, they really just are a covering , they dont penetrate very well.
i'm using rifle monte carlo stocks with  no checkering anyhow.
i'm looking for a antiqued coloring, what ideas do you have for color ?
i have even though about a coclor blend or tiger-ing

Sanding isn't an option on the checkered walnut BC stock set. :(

Dunno about the current production, but all three of mine are extremely nicely checkered compared to the TDC stocks I just got.

This is what I do. Strip with stripper and 3M green pad, repeat if need be.
Use stiff nylon brush on checkering NOT WIRE
After all is stripped. Open wood grain up with damp cloth and iron.
Let dry a couple days  than sand w/block and very fine paper.
finish w/ tung oil. Repeat w/ tung until desired result
Tung oil is very forgiving. It lets you build the finish slowly.
NOTE If you want the wood grain closed and finish smooth you can use tung oil sanding sealer (fine sand) and more tung oil.
Our just skip damp cloth and iron
Remember tung oil is a wipe on wipe off finish.
