Is there such a thing???????
« on: January 13, 2008, 01:33:38 PM »
I believe I am becoming a real fan of the 308 caliber family. I have a tack driving Remington 700 SPS Varmint 243 that I really love. I plan on adding a 308 someday soon. I also like the ballistics of the 7MM-08 and could see myself with one of those someday. My question is there such a caliber that necks down a 308 to a 223 caliber? I would bet this would be a real fast flat shooting caliber. Maybe it is a wildcat? I don't know but it sure souds like a good round to me. Dale

Dale you aren't the only one who likes the 308 family. Most of my deer have been taken with a 308. I plan to get another in the Rem 700 VTR. I don't know about the 308 necked down to a 223 though. Sounds like neat idea

They neck the 243 down to 22 cal and now with the heavier bullets using 1/8 or 1/7 twist barrel they say it  makes for a nice varmit or 600yd rifle.  JLK is making a VLD 90gr 22 cal bullet http://www.swampworks.com/jlk/.  Well good luck

I am not all knowing about cartridges, but I know of two that are based on the "08" parent case.  The 22-243 Winchester and the 22-243 Middlestead.  They are similar as far as case length and of course head diameter but the Middlestead has a sharper shoulder taper giving it more case capacity.  I think they both are notorious barrel burners, but that is a controversial subject.  In my opinion the 22-250Rem is about as much powder that a .224 diameter bullet can effectively use.   While voicing opinions, I think the 243Win makes a better varmint caliber than any of the .224s, as I have achieved higher muzzle velocities with heavier bullets in the 243 such as 4300 ft/sec with 58 grain slugs.

I have 2 22-243 winchester's, not the Middlestead version.  I have  one with a 1-9 twist barrel that I shoot 75 gr. A-max's with and a 1-14 twist that I just recently had built to shoot the lighter bullets.  With the 75 grain A-max's I get about 3600 fps.  I haven't chrongraphed the new one yet, but it should be a screamer.

How much "edge" do the above calbers have over the 22-250? Isn't that pushing it about as far as anyone realy want's to go when you consider barrel life.
