I've done something similar with a .280 Rem. I bought some A Square 175 monolithic solids just to see what sort of penetration through Western Hemlock wood rounds about 10-12" in diameter. The velocity is 2668 fps as measured across a Chrony Master at 15' from the muzzle. It went clean through the wood round dead center at 100 yds. I reduced the velocity to 2490 fps to replicate the velocity from a 7 X 57 Mauser and it did the same thing. I then used 220 gr round nose soft points from a 30-06 at the targets and they too went clean through. Obviously then, 4000 ft/pds of energy is not required to go through 6 X 6" wood blocks to break clays behind them. I undoubtedly figured 4000 ft/pds of energy would go through them.
