H&R. In competition.
« on: November 01, 2007, 03:39:01 PM »
Hi! All.
Haven't been on in awhile. Have been on Elk & Deer hunts.
Was just looking at the C.B.A. site and they had posted the results from several
matches. An. NEF. .308 cal. finished third in the only light production match result
I could find. Maybe we should contact the owner and take some lessons.
Food for thought.
Rich. ;D

I'm toying with the idea.

A couple years ago I shot the ITRC match in Gillette WY ( http://www.dlsports.com/npage7a.html) when the mother of a friend who was registered had a stroke three days before the match.

With only three days to prepare I mounted a borrowed scope on my .308 CZ550 and grabbed 500 rounds of Portugese surplus ammo.  I really bombed, coming in dead last against guys who'd spent the last year and thousands of dollars preparing, as well as U.S. sniper teams who'd already done tours in Afganistan or Iraq and others slated to.

The helicopter event was FUN!

Another friend wants me to shoot the '08 MGM Ironman.  The sniper portion of the match will require shots to at least 630 yards.  I'm thinking it would be fun to run a .280 Handi with a Mueller TAC II scope.  I couldn't do any worse than I did at ITRC.

Cordially,

MTGlass

I used to shoot - and score - CBA matches, and the class winners often did not represent the most accurate rifles around.  A lot depended on how many and which shooters entered a match - some matches had only a couple of entries, others had dozens; some had nothing but newbies, others had all seasoned shooters.  Just looking at the results for the winners may have little bearing on how accurate a particular rifle/shooter really is.

That said, there is no reason why an NEF rifle could not shoot well and win cast bullet matches.  The disadvantages of the rifle are poor stocks for shooting off bags, slow lock time and a 'jarring' hammer fall.  Shooter skill and technique can help to overcome these issues.  I'd love to see more NEF owners join the CBA and enter the postal matches!

The Handi / sandbag problem can be gotten around with just a little thinking outside the box , like this .

That is true stimpy - but then the rifle could not compete in the stock rifle classes.  When you mod your rifle like that, you end up competing against the $2500 benchrest rifles.....    :o :o :o

Last summer we had a "sniper shoot" at local gun range here, and as the range didn't want the steel targets tore up too much i couldn't shoot my 30-338.  So i decided to use my handy in .223.  Unfortunately 'murphy's law' had another surprise for me as well, when i went to get ammo for shoot the stores were all out of my preferred and what i could get was only grouping about 1.5 inches. Even with the .223 being a little light for the reaching to 400 meters, i still finished in the middle of the pack. and actually was shooting next to the winner for the 100 yards and off hand part.  The Handy smoked him in the off hand.  my stock rig was the only thing on the firing line that didn't look like a custom sniper or target setup.

i have  ;)   ;)

my ultra will stand up to just about anything at 600 and in BTW i shoot F-class mostly , and we have our stupid little squadron sniper compositions where its who gets the most hits for 600-1000 (even if aloud the handi would stay home on that one)

Oh really....what cast bullets are you using at 600 yards to beat the "snipers"?  I didn't know that the CBA sponsored matches at that range.   (This is a discussion of cast bullet competition, deadeye.....)   ;)  ;)  ;)

i think i got into it with you a long time ago on this subject .

the title of this post is  "H&R. In competition." i was talking about shooting in competition . come on man look at that 300 do you really think i've shot a cast bullet in that???? come on man i even said in the post you quoted that i shoot F class i don't even have a clue what CBA is . so take a step back buddy and take a chill pill , if you'll read my post you'll see that i'm not talk about your damn CBA crap i'm talking about shooting a handi in competition , and that i have done.

oh and those "snipers" i'm supposed to beat that can't happen, they always seam to have the same score i have, humm.......that must be because i am one.

thanks for getting me pumped up buddy i'm going to go pack for iraq.

I do not know when we may or may not have "gotten into it" before but you are way off base here.  The original poster (remember him, the guy who asked the first question) was only talking about CBA competition.  You even quoted my post  where I clearly stated "enter a few CBA matches" - you then said you have....but used a jacketed example.  Why the argument when you clearly didn't read my post before you answered it.???

The average Handi barrel is not as well suited to CB shooting as some custom barrels due to rifling design and throating, so it is at a disadvantage right out of the gate.  But I never said that a Handi could not shoot very well, nor did I ever say one could not win against more costly rifles.  I just implied that CB competition is more difficult than it sounds and that one should try it - it is the subject of this thread afterall. BTW, I have scored .300 WinMags used in CB competition more than once. You should try it....

Unlike many above, I have not hijacked the original poster's thread - I've stayed with his original question about CBA competition.

For those who do not understand what this thread was originally about - CBA is the Cast Bullet Association.  They shoot matches using cast bullets (CBs) only.  It is a whole different ballgame than shooting jacketed bullets.  A tackdriving rifle with jacketed bullets may not shoot CBs worth a hoot.
