.454 handi
« on: November 06, 2007, 04:22:49 PM »
Quick, I reamed the 45LC to 454, still shoots well.

300 gr hornady xtp/mag .452, 26.1 gr 2400, 1885 fps.. Alliant says 28 gr 2400 MAX...
230 gr Rem hp 451, 27gr 2400, 1945 fps.. these bullets most likely blow up on impact, didn't recover any.. 25yds  same hole 5 rounds..

I ran out of the 300 gr bullets. recoil is manageable with all that I shot..
I will get another 45LC barrel an ream it to .460 S&W later, this one's to much fun....

Wow that sounds awesome!!!

those 230gr. hp's sound wicked and deadly!

How hard was it to ream it out?  Did you use a lathe?

Rick I reamed it by hand, not hard to do, don't go fast an use a lot of lubricate..
the 230 hp, would be OK for unwanted varmint's, but not big game..

Really?  It's that simple?  I would have thought you'd need a lathe.  Did you just get the reamer from brownells?

Will the .45 LC barrel hold the pressure of the .454 cartridge ok?

Tim an Rick,
I made a neck reamer out of a 45LC reamer.. grind the cutter for the rim off you don't need it the
rim is all ready there..
it will do the 460 to, so 2 for 1...

I don't want to buy an $85 reamer or hand ream mine, 4D will have one for my smith to rent in due time. ;) My 460 brass has a .515" rim, won't fit in the rim cut of my barrel, so it need to be cut also.

The .460 S&W has a slightly
larger rim diameter than the .45
Colt or .454 Casull, with Starline
cases running .515 and Hornady
.5175 inch. (For comparison the
.45/.454 are standardized at .512
inch.) As a result the .460 requires
its own shellholder. As of
this writing, dies are available
from Hornady, RCBS, Redding
and Lee, with Hornady being
used in this project.

Tim, I tryed a 460 case backward, it did fit but was tight, the thickness seamed good to... I tryed it again, starlight brass,
fit tight but went in.. maybe I'll shorten a case, an try it the other way... may be I can DO A PICTURE..

OK Tim, I cut off a case, the action closes an extracts.. so my handi has a larger cut out for rim than is needed for the 45LC.
 it is starline brass..
