cz 20 gauge bobwhite
« on: September 24, 2007, 03:19:53 PM »
recently bought the bobwhite for bird hunting. The gun handles great and the swing is terrific. Took it to the skeet range and after 20 shots the barrel was so hot-even through the wood-I had to use gloves to shoot the gun. I'm not going to use it for skeet but did anyone else have this problem? I have a old abercrombie in a 20 and never had that problem

Depends on how fast you fire those shots. If you're on a squad with a least one or two others it shouldn't get very hot during a round of skeet but if you're shooting by yourself and just firing one shot right after another then you better betcha 20 fast shots will make any shotgun barrel hot.

I was shooting with 1 other guy, the temperature was in the mid-80's and we were shooting pretty fast. Although the gun is great, it may be my imagination but the barrels seem extremely thin. I'll shoot with a larger squad next and wait until the weather cools off.

They ARE rather thin.  ;D

Shooting a two man squad the barrels on my Browning O/Us get quite warm as well. I really don't like two man squads for skeet as the pace is too fast for me. My breathing gives out too quickly at that pace. I really need at least three on a squad for me to allow my breathing to slow back down just moving from station to station. I try never to be first up on a squad for that reason. I need a bit of breathing time before shooting after moving to the next station.

I had a cz mallard 12 and had the same thing happen and I ended up trading it.  I have an Ithaca 100 20 ga sxs but I don't use it for trap for the same reason.

I intend to use it for bird hunting and therefore i don't expect to fire 25 shots in 20 minutes. For skeet I use a Beretta silver pigeon II 12 G which works just fine. The CZ SXS is light and swings great with a straight stock. It's a great hunting gun but I'll keep my Beretta for 4 rounds of skeet on a Saturday's.

New England Custom Gun (Google search for NECG) makes a wrap-around leather gizmo to help protect your hands from the hot barrels of a side by side shotgun. You can find it in the "shooting accessories" section on their web site.
