2007 Deer management permits
« on: August 03, 2007, 09:07:57 AM »
http://www.dec.ny.gov/permits/30409.html

Above is the link to the probability of getting a permit for this year.  After two years they are finally giving some permits in my unit (4P), but one needs preference points which I don't have so it will mean another season without a chance for a doe.   At least we don't have antler restrictions.  A couple units in the catskills do and also require preference points for a doe tag.  The hunters there don't have a whole lot to look forward to it seems, without doe tags and only being allowed to shoot a buck with 6 points or more.

nyh863 ,
i hunt in one of the units you described (wmu 3c)  and yes it inhales virgorously . Its not 6 points however ,its only 3. A buck must have 3 legal points on one side to be a shooter. This means spikes and forkhorns are out.I got lucky last year and took a 7 pointer. That also means during archery its either a doe (flathead ) or a buck with 3 or more points on one side also.Thats the point that i hate.

Eventhough antler restriction has been in effect a year or two in the 4 different units in the Catskills I doubt the legal buck will be coming out of the woodwork.  Getting any branched antler buck will be as big a challenge as ever.  Without doe permits I can see many casual hunters not even bothering to go out.  Who could blame them really.

After 15 yrs of living in the midwest, I've just moved back to Ulster Co in April.  I asked for two DMP for 3J and received one as well as a preference point for next year.  I don't mind the antler restriction as I also purchased a muzzleloader permit which is good for either sex (buck antler restrictions apply).   But the best news is there's been a bear spotted on the land I'll be hunting so I'm pumped up!

Didn't have bears in Illinois!!

How did you receive preference points for next year if you did get one permit?  If you receive only one of two, you get NO preference points.  At least that is how I understood things.

Because I was given bad information by the guy selling me the tags, you are correct.  No preference point.

I applied for a Permit in a Unit that is by Preference Points only with 3 points on my side. Got denied again last years application showed 3 points and this year does also. Who can figure NYS DEC and their computer. Probably went to one of Grannis's buddies, who does not hunt.

The points only allow you to be considered but not necessarily picked.  Without points you're not even considered. If there area any left over permits for that area after Oct. 1st you may be picked at that time and notified by mail. So as of now it's not a done deal.

I applied for two and got them both...9P and 9H.  I did it all on-line...No need to go to a store or my city clerks office...

I think NYS made a mistake in my favor.  I received a wm permit for a whole WMU where preference points were needed and all that was applied for was a landowner permit for family farm within that wmu.  I have always been under the impression that a landowner permit was only good for that specific plot of land within the wmu.  ??????  My permit clearly makes no restriction and can be used anywhere in the WMU specified.
