2nd Freedom Arms
« on: October 06, 2007, 11:09:21 AM »
I decided to add the second Freedom Arms on my list today.  My first was a 4 3/4 83 in 475 Premiere with Indian Stag Grips from Eagle Grips and Express Sights.  My new and second is a Model 97 with a 4 1/4 inch barrel, a round butt and Micarta grips in 45 Colt.  I do have a couple of questions.  One I am under the impression the model 97 will handle hot loads that are intended for Rugers and above.  Am I right?  My second question is, has anyone tried the Cor-Bon loads with the 225 grain Barnes copper bullets, and if so what were your results?

I do love these FA hand cannons.

You are only partially correct. They do OK with that pressure level BUT the cylinder is same length as the old Colt SAA basically so can't take the OAL that the Ruger can so many Ruger loads won't physically fit into the gun.

I do understand that Bill, I appreciate the reminder though.  My primary goal right now is to find a load using a light to medium weight 45 bullet that will shoot "flat" from the muzzle out to 150 yards.  Flat being a relative term as I realize it will not match any small caliber pistol or center fire rifle rounds for flat shooting.  I am primarily looking for longer range on predators and varmints.

I like the 250 Hornady XTP driven by Ruger strength loads of 2400 as shown in the Hornady manual in my 5 1/2" 97. But I wouldn't say any .45 Colt load shoots " flat" to 150 yds, by any definition of flat. In any event, congratulations on acquiring your second FA. I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
