replacement rear sight for FA 475
« on: September 20, 2007, 03:33:47 PM »
I am thinking I may have to try out a different rear sight for my FA... tried mine out with the experess sights last weekend, and I did not shoot it too well the other day.. not as well as expected, but had just shot about 80 rounds of 45 70 in a no. 1 and a Marlin levergun; and was in a bit of a hurry, so will try a few more times before judging the set up for my uses.
I went onto the FA site and found complete sights but no partials.. which one would you guys suggest... I shoot the standard RBH sights well and the ruger Mark one target bull barrelled pistol sights well... considering that what rear sight would you folks use, as the site is confusing me some.. I will strongly first consider changing the express sight out, but want to try the front brass bead rifle type sight before I give up on it...changing it is not that big a deal to me either. I must say my eyes are old and tired, and possibly I will have to go to a brighter sight in the front and be sure there is some sunlight on either side of the front so I do not lose it completely...
I did read that one or two folks like the firesight type of front site and one liked the bowen rear and a narrowed front, and some like the patridge front sight...
I just saw the choices on the FA site and threw up my hands..
HELP !!

I prefer the standard Premiere Grade rear sight and blade front ... I have shot the fiber optics as they work fine, but I don't really need them where I hunt.

Dave Clements will make a post front sight for the FA's for something like $25.  That's an option that I keep meaning to try out, but never have got around to.

My very tired & old eyes prefer the Fiber Optic Front Sight and the standard square notch rear sight. The Fiber jumps out in view better than the Brass bead and the square notch is much more precise than the Express.

I have the premiere rear site with the square notch matched with the brass bead front.  It seems to work really well.  I am actually trying to find a brass bead front site for my Rugers.  The Freedom Arms website does list partial sets.  If you go to the Guns area, scroll to the bottom where it says "option/price sheet for existing guns", then to the bottom of that page it will have the partial sets.

Hope this helps.

Hitman's sight went on the gun... shot it ... sighted for 20 yards a couple of adjustments...then shot out to 40 60 100, it was great .. I loved every minit of it.. the light was good and the target was easily seen.
I shot very well with it... it was better for me than the express sights by far.. that and tightening the frame and grip screws... could have helped too..
the square back sight .. with the gold bead front was very good .. I will try it in low light as well.
I was pleasantly surprised at the small amount the  llight loaded 475 bullets dropped at a hundred yards.. I was expecting some real hold over, but did not need much at all.
more later..
