opinions on Choate "Varmint" stocks
« on: September 26, 2007, 03:20:01 AM »
I have the .308  bull-barrel with the Survival-Stock.
I find that the recoil from the .308 is a bit "much"
with the narrow-plastic compartment-cap on the stock.

I was looking at the Choate "varmint"  Stock+ForeEnd+CheekRest
19-01-16 Varmint Stock
19-02-08 ForeEnd
22-04-03 Tall CheekRest
from:  http://www.RifleStock.com/
It seems the item descriptions are easier to locate on  MidWayUSA

and would like to know if anyone has them...
opinion?  does the  Varmint-Stock provide a more "normal"
level of cushion to the recoil ?

thanks

I have used the Choate Varmint as many here. I personally liked it, though I believed the grips to be a tad thick but not too bad. The recoil pad is much better here than the non existing one on the Survivor. I got one of these on my shorty 12ga and man what a thumper :o...fun though ;D You might want to order the check riser though from Choate. Last I checked it wasn't very much, and it wasn't included with mine when I ordered it. CS over there is pretty good and easy to work with, just ask them about it, If I am not mistaken it's the same one from their other Varmint stocks...but don't quote me on  that.
I say pick one up and try it out, see how you like it. You can always turn around and trade or sale it here in the classifieds if you are happy with them.

I don't have any of the varmint stocks..but have handled a few with them...they seem real nice...I have owned the Survivor stock set on a 308 bull barrel...I got rid of it as fast as I could after a couple of boxes of shells thru it...I went with the cinnamon laminates and never regretted it...

I have one on my .243 Ultra Varmint fluted (came that way) and one on my 35 Whelen (soon to be Whelen AI). I like them they fit me just right and the weight is acceptable. I have not tried the cheek rest but I think you will like the stock for that .308. JMHO - F50

Just looked at the cheek rest mentioned. The reason I have never used it or even new it was available is my military training lol I use pipe foam insulation from ACE hdw and 100 mph duct tape or cloth leg wrap to form my own. I can also do a pretty darn good palm swell. All custom designed to fit me. JMHO - F50

I don't have the stock but the varmint fore end did wonders for my 223 accuracy.

I really like it.  Seems to reduce the recoil to me and very comfortable.

thanks for the replies, guys...
I'll add them to my  Wish-List(tm)
and be placing an order before long...

I was hoping/thinking it would work well,
a guy at the range has the  Choate Varmint-stock
on his  Savage-bolt-223 and the  Handi-"parts"
look to be the "same idea"...

take care...

At first I wasn't fond of the Choate Varmint stock, but after 2yrs of shooting the 22-250 Ultra, I've grown attached to it. ;D

I think that's the Harris, but it could be the Shooter's Ridge(Outers) clone too, I have both in the 9"-13". ;)
