XTP vs. Top Flite XL
« on: August 03, 2007, 05:14:19 PM »
Just wanted to share something that happened at the range today that I thought was pretty wild.  I was shooting "Ultra Varmint Wannabe" .17 HMR with the Hornady 20 gr. XTP rounds at 75 yards and dropping everything dead on, when i found a golf ball on the range.   So, I put it up on the board up against one of the 4x4 posts.   One shot dead in the center, the ball falls off the board and this is what I find....

Entrance:

Exit:

I thought I missed it, until I turned the ball over and saw the exit.  The entrance hole in the golf ball is no bigger than the tip of the hollow point!!  Then, get this, I look behind where the golf ball was, and in the 4x4 the bullet only penetrated about 1/4".   So I dig it out:

The copper jacket is still intact and attached and the bullet has expanded ot 2.5 times it's original size.  I have a gram scale at work, and am interested in seeing just how much of the original 20 grains this bullet has retained.   All in all, I'm pretty damn surprised, whether I should be or not.  This little round never ceases to amaze.

Yup. I've seen most of those reports....just never first hand.   I really didn't expect it to blow through like that.    I guess I overestimated the golf ball.   ;)
