Winchester Model 70 markings for a Pre-64 model BARREL only?
« on: September 12, 2007, 02:27:43 PM »
Can someone please tell me what typical markings should be found on a Winchester Model 70 BARREL that shows as caliber ".30 GOV'T 06" if it is or isn't a Pre-64.  Of course since I do not have the receiver, I can't determine if this is or isn't Pre-64.  On the botton/underside of this bbl there is, right close to the threads, the number 1906, a triangle and the number 37 right next to an index line.
Any help will sure be appreciated.  Blaster (Bob in So, CO)

On pre-64 models, the date of manufacture is usually marked on the bottom of the barrel.
I would figure that your barrel was made in 1937.

Chuck,
Many thanks for the quick response.  Even though it is marked on the bottom with a 1906 do you still think that I can presume to have been made "around" 1937?  As long as I know that it was/is a Pre-64 barrel, that's really all I care about.  I'm taking it and the stock for it to a gun show to place on a table to sell and I just wanted to make certain that when I place a description on it, I can pretty safely say that it is a Pre-64.  Thanks again!  Bob
