Good grief gun prices jumpin like Gas
« on: September 04, 2007, 11:59:11 AM »
I was at gander mountain(eye-ballin' a few potential additions to the family ;)   ) and noticed that gun prices have jumped there about $100 on nearly every wood stocked bolt gun.

Are you guys seeing the same thing?  I haven't gotten to check much of anywhere else.

Some places yes and others no.  Mostly in the chain stores I see the mark ups.  but I guess things do go up in price.  Wages, benefits pensions etc... not to mention the cost of materials.  But it would be easier to see the price increases in smaller increments. :)

i have a buddy who recently bought two rifles a few weeks apart at prices that are unconscienable!   he "STOLE" 'EM is what it seems like!    i can't believe the bargains he got on two rifles!

my point?   be patient and look for a bargain.   he did; and he found two that look like they'd been put away in a vault for years!  both are beauties.

take care,

I was at GM 2 weeks ago and I noticed the same thing. Looked like Remington had the biggest price jump anywhere from $100-$250.
A new SF-2 was $1259.

We just go a GM where I live. Most of there gun prices there are quite a bit more than every other gun shop in town.

Remember that hunting season is right around the corner, so prices are usually at their highest right about now.  After hunting season is where you really see the sales/clearances.  As such, unless you really NEED a rifle right now, I'd say just wait.

Have prices gone up at the on-line brokers as well?

I've never seen any great deals on gunbroker. When you buy anything you have to add another $100 for shipping and transfer fees. Too many fishermen trying to hook a sucker. I recently saw someone trying to get $500 out of a common yugo sks.

Oh not true! You can find great deals on Online auctions. I have a local FFL who does the transfer for $5. He's in the game to help people get guns, not to scam you out of your hard earned cash. Also most folks ship for anywhere between $15.00 to $25.00 and if its out of state you don't pay tax. I've purchased three rifles online and after being patient and finding a deal, I have saved on average $150.00-$200.00 per rifle. Just like anything else shop around and make sure what your going to pay before you commit.  Just figure out what you want and keep searching for it. There are some folks out there that are asking way too much for what they have, an easy fix, don't buy from them...:)

Ditto.  Patience and common sense are keys to success with the online auctions.

I think Gander Mountain is getting out of control on some stuff.  I have been watching two used guns at my local store (Greensburg, PA) that have been on the shelf for over two months.  Last week, the price on one increased $150 and the other $50.  These were used guns that were not selling.  I don't even look at reloading components there anymore

May not be your experiences but not untrue....The only shop in my area charges $50 so you are very lucky. This adds up when you apply shipping, unless it's a C&R then I can skip the shop.  But then I can find C&R guns cheaper from the distributors.  Many of us do not have access to good transfer friendly shops without having to drive 100+ miles.

Well, those prices are a reflection of everything else here.  Gas prices up, people going into foreclosure, bankruptcy, etc.  I rarely if ever buy a gun from a chain.  I end up buying most from local guys, people I work with, or the guy who needs cash walking into the gun show. I'll get nice guns and save hundreds.  Even with the transfer, I still do well on the online auctions. Patience is the key.

Most of the summer I watched a Rem 700 in my local GM store sit on the shelf for $505. It had a date on the tag of 4-06-07.
Thinking varmint season is mostly over I stopped in 10 days ago and looked it over. I put it on the shelf knowing I would be back in town 3 days later.
I went back to buy the rifle and it was remarked to $595!
The guy behind the gun counter is a good guy. I asked him about the prices going up and he said they marked all used rifles at a higher price due to GM's new policy of 12 mo warranty, a lock and maybe a cheep case. He called Jim, the manager who offered to forgo the warranty and goodies for $20 less! I told him that was still $70 higher than a few days earlier and turned and walked out the store, shame too that is the only GM store I have been in with knowledgeable guys behind the counter.
