I gave up
« on: April 28, 2007, 07:21:55 AM »
After over 2 years of trying everything under the sun , i made a deal to get rid of my 450 Marlin handi , nothing was working for me to get the groups that I wanted out of it . I even spent over an hour on the phone with another member here to see if he could help ( thanks Mac ) but still no luck .

The best i could get was 5" at 50 yards  >:( , for what he wanted it for those groups will be fine but not for me . he wanted something for heavy hitting at 30 yards or less and it will do that for sure . ;)

will i try another 450 , MAYBE , but not right now , having too much fun with the 45/70 .  ;D

Stimpy, did ya ever slug the bore? May have been one of those that are more open at the muzzle than the throat end, there have been some 45-70 barrels reported that way. :-\

Ya Tim , that was part of the problem , open - close - open - close , the bore looked like a water slide .  :o , could have sent it back but it became a quest to see if i could make it shoot , went through over 20 diffrent bullets of diffrent sizes and at least 10 diffrent powders .

I can be damn persistent when i want to be .

Sorry it didn't work out Stimpy...I know it wasn't for lack of trying on your part... :-[...Sometimes it happens with these little rifles...and when it does it is a major let down...It's good that you got your 45-70 to finish up all those bullets...and I am quite sure you'll have about 20 different good loads for it by the time your done...or your shoulder is  :D :D :D :D :D

About the only option for that bore would be to lap it with a lead slug on a rod so the bore was consistent, replacement would probably has been the best route tho. :(

Now i have to break down and get a .459 sizer to do all the over sized bullets so i can shoot them in the 45/70 . boy reloading is saving me tons of money .  ;D

Try Lee liquid lube & try shooting them un-sized ?

No offense intended , but I could never figure out a " reason to be " for the .450 Marlin , for the reloader ?  For the person that does not reload , it makes a certain amount of sense .

Kinda got to go with you on this one , in a good lever gun the 450 shines to its true potential , however in the single shot Handi i think it is more of a fad round , just something diffrent .  ???

On a whim sent in and got a 450 Marlin barrel just to try the Hornady Leverevolution ammo at full strength. I haven't had the problem you have had Stimpy. The Hornady ammo shoots about 2 1/2 inch groups at 100 yards and think part of that is recoil anticipation. Man those things hurt even with the stock loaded with lead and an extra shotgun slip on pad. I can only handle about 5 shots at one sitting. Took two trips to the range just to sight it in properly. However, the same hunting load I use for my 45/70, 52.1 grains of RL7 and a 300 gr HP with CCI 200 primer, is just as accurate as in the 45/70 and about 3 inches lower than the Leverevolution ammo so sighted the handloads dead center and left the store bought 3 inches high at 100. Now if I ever have a reason to carry it for a 200 yard shot I'm ready.

Have to agree. For a normal, non-Handiholic person, a 45/70 is all anyone would ever need in this caliber.

A .45-70 in a Marlin can be loaded hot enough to cross your eye balls , if that is your pleasure .

I personally like .45-70 it loaded a little milder .

I shot both Horn. loads in mine & they shot good for factory stuff, 1.25-1.75" 3 shot groups. I sold it to skifastchad, I hope it does well for him. I had barrels like Stimpi's in other calibers that were really bad & some tat were very good. When they start off bad for me (Handi or otherwise), I find they are seldom a tack driver with anything, I move on. A good barrel will make itself known early.

Do not know about a Handi , but Marlins like big bullets , around .460" or bigger .  Maybe a Handi .45-70 likes big bullets too ?

You are talking about lead bullets ?

Stimpy,
I think those barrels need to go back to H&R so they can learn from their mistakes.
