My newest venture..38x74r in a Target Classic
« on: April 07, 2009, 04:44:42 AM »
I have always wanted a 9.3x74r but never wanted to pay a $1000 or more for a Ruger one or a European singleshot or double. I decided I could do it cheaper.
I am going to rechamber one of my 38-55 barrels to my wildcat, 38x74r.  The 9.3x74r shoots a  286 grain .366 dia bullet.  I had talon( on GBO)of 7 Mile Hill Ranch make me some jacketed 285 grain .379 bullets. I then necked up a couple of 9.3x74r brass to accept this bullet.  I am going to send the dummies, a 38-55 barrel, and a set of redding dies to OTT to rechamber the barrel, and rechamber the dies.  I will have to get a .379 or 380 expander ball for the dies.   OTT charges $125 for the barrel work and $125 for the die work.  I should be able to use 9.3x74r data for reloading.
I have attached a pic of a 38x55, two 38x74r's and an unaltered 9.3x74r.
I will keep you updated as I progress through this.

I have thought about going the other way also to 358 and put it in a 22" 357 barrel.

Looks cool tell everyone how it shoots and stuff like that.  Now I wonder what a 45 caliber bullet on that case would do??  Damn I'm too broke to be tempted like this.

About the same as a 45-110, the 9.3 holds 76.7 gr water as is compared to 96.8 gr water for the 45-110, if you could blow the 9.3 out, they'd be close to the same volume and the case length would shorten some.

Hornady would sell a lot more 9.3x74r ammo if they convinced Remington to offer it in a 26" or 28" classic for the $350 price tag....

On another site I frequent, someone was talking about a 38-90Win, and its use in BPCR.  They said the 9.3 x 74R was derrived from it, so you might be able to use the data for the Win. case.  I had been shooting 270gr Hawk slugs in my 38-72 that I made from the NEF 38-55 barrel.  They were .377" in dia. but was told they would "slug" up.  Ran them up to 2500fps with sub 1" accuracy

Got the details worked out with Mike at OTT and the barrel and dies are off to get worked on.  It will be awhile, but I'm too busy to shoot now anyway.  I will keep the group in the loop.

Try searching on here for 11.4X74R Several have converted their 45/410 Barrels to this . Makes for an interesting conversion. 35 Wheelen rechambered to 9 X 74r sounds  interesting as well.
