Topper 158 Receivers
« on: August 17, 2007, 06:22:05 PM »
Are the Topper 158's receivers in the same class as the SB2?  I have a Topper in 30/30 and looking for a 357mag barrel or "slave" barrel to be converted to 357mag by Orgunsmithing.  Thanks for all of your help guys.  Later.

No, they're cast iron, current production SB2 frames are heat treated investment cast alloy steel.

Quickdtoo, so does that mean it won't handle the 30/30 barrel that came with it?  I'm just trying to get a grip on all of this.  Will this receiver handle a 357mag barrel?  Thanks for your time.

Joel.
As they where available from the factory in  22 hornet, 22jet, 30-30, 357 maxi (That's what mine was) maybe a few others....
Yes I would say you will be safe. BUT the factory will not do this (as you know) for liability reasons.

My own twist here, this was manufactured by H&R, who was bought by NEF. Then NEF was bought by Marlin. So its really, Marlin who is not comfortable with fitting barrels to receivers that where made by H&R. Again, this is speculation on my part. ;)

If you weigh all the options, you may find its cheaper to just cut your ties to the 158. Just look for a NEF, SB2 in the caliber you want and don't look back. Possibly even sell your 158 (It will go quick in here and likely recoup all that you paid.)

On a personal note, I have found and purchased another 30-30 barrel, so I am all set, thanks and good luck!!

Joel

I would not be consurned about the 30/30 on that frame as that was a cal that was offered on the 158 , however i would not try to add any other barrels to it . Just pick up another Handi to use for that with a newer SB-2 frame .
