My new toy (Winchester 670 .225 Win)
« on: July 28, 2007, 03:27:02 PM »
Got this one today.  Saw it at a local pawn shop and talked them down to $240, so it had to come home with me :D.

Aside from some minor stock wear, it looks brand new.  Only problem is the obscure .225 Winchester chambering.  I'm a handloader so I can reload to offset the costs, but even brass is rather rare (though I hear that you can make it from .30-30 brass).  So what's the verdict: good buy or should I have passed on the oddball chambering? :)

Bad info on the brass. .30-30 brass is not made to withstand the pressures the .225 operates at. SSK Industries ALWAYS has a good supply on hand.

It seems unusual that the stock has 2 recoil lugs...I own 2 670's and the only one with 2 lugs is a 7mmRemMag..The other is a 30-06 with a single lug...I just acquired a very nice 770 in 30-06 and it has a single lug...I wonder if somebody swapped stocks on that one?

You peaked my curiosity :).  I picked up my Gun Trader's Guide (slightly older edition - 27th) and turned back to the 670's.  It doesn't actually mention anything about the lugs, but in the pictures both the standard and magnum versions are shown with 2 of them.

Thanks for the info about the brass GB.  I'll likely just buy a decent amount of them now and hope I don't run out.  Judging from the cartridge dimensions it also looks like if push came to shove the chamber could be reamed out to .220 Swift, but I'd rather keep it as is unless someday I flat out can't find brass at all for it.

PS This gun was fairly early in the production line for the 670.  It's within the first 8,000 of them made.  Perhaps early models had 2 lugs and they switched to a single one later in the production?  Just a thought.  No reasoning behind it other than the fact that this was supposed to be a budget rifle and budge rifles often have cost cutting measures incorporated over their lifespan.

The checkering on my Mag is like yours too..The checkering on the 2 '06's is a bit different...The Mag was made in 1968 and has the two position slide safety...The 770 was made in 1970 and has the on bolt 3 position safety as does the other 670 '06...

I've looked for a long time for one on those Winchesters, I'm envious.  I finally took a Ruger No.1 Varminter in 223 and had it rechambered for the 225 Win.  Didn't gain much, but now I have a 225 Win and most folks don't.  Win brass is still availble and they make a run once a year.  Not too hard to fine but should stock up when you can find it.  I took mine to Montana this spring and used it on PD's.  It's a performer, glad I did the conversion.

I don't know much about the caliber but I know an old retired outfitter, in Montana that swears by it.  All of his kids and grandkids took their first antelope with it.  He has a closet full of ammo in that caliber, left over from when he owned a sporting goods store.  His "big" rifle for deer and elk is a .270 hand loaded to 7mag ballistics.   I would have bought the rifle just because I trust his knowledge.  You did good.

"A .270 handloaded to 7mm Mag ballistics"  I'll look for a different outfitter...
