.223 ultra varmint?
« on: July 14, 2007, 08:57:56 AM »
hey pards
i havent posted on here in awhile because sad to say im handiless :'(
my brother had a fit over my .223 ultra so i had him do around 400 dollars worth of work for me for it
now im starting to get the fever for another .223
this time around i think im gonna try one of the fluted barreled ultra varmint rifles in .223
does anyone have one? are they better than the standard 22inch heavy barrel?
enough to be worth the extra cashola?
is the varmint stock comfortable? i was thinking abt  using a standard synthetic stock with the varmint forend with a bipod
anyone got one set up this way?
if so could i see some pics to drool over
and also if you have one whats your best groups with it?
on last thing that fluted barrel, is it a heavy barrel diameter? what is the diameter of it at the muzzle?
man the more i type about this thing the more i want one ::)
thanks in advance for any help with this mess

Not a 223, but a 22-250, looks the same. Another option http://rrarms.com/catalog.php?prod=GSB28T2

my 223 started out as a 243 with camo stock that I got off a guy at my range for $100. I sent it back to H&R and had a Fluted bull bbl installed. The bbl measures 3/4in at the muzzle, yet the bbl fits into the standard forend. Mine has a extractor, first one I have had on a handi, and it works well, everytime. I got a bipod from Cheaper than Dirt, $21 I think, aluminum, and fits onto the front swivel stud, or a picatinny rail. The bipod folds, extends 9 to 11ins, and panns left and right. So far with reloads, best groups have been minute of angle. Took it out last weekend for a little rock shooting, and it is accurate in the field! Rig weighs 10lb 4oz complete.

I have an Ultra Varmint but not the fluted. (Didnt offer it then)  As for accuracy,  I'M SURE ITS JUST AS GOOD!!

Mine is easily a 1/2" shooter with its fav ammo.

Once you do get it, be sure to post up how it shoots!!!

Good luck with yours!!

The question I would like answered is:
in .223 is there an accuracy difference between the 22" standard Bull and the 24" ultra?

thankyou

I have the standard 22" bull in .223.  Off the bench @ 100yds. it will shoot 3 and 4 shot groups you can cover with a quarter with WWB 45gr. JHP's.  It needs a trigger job and I hope it will get a little better.  I almost got the Ultra.  I can't remember the price difference.  I'm happy with what I got.  You really can't go wrong with either.  With the Ultra you can get a fluted I think, nicer furniture, and a slightly longer barrel.  Mine gets pretty beat up in the woods hunting woodchucks and coyotes.

The longer barrel won't give you better accuracy.
It will give you more velocity.
The flatter trajectory will make it seem more accurate on a prairie dog hunt though.
Also 24" is what most ammo and loads are tested at.
The flutes help cool the barrel and look cool too.
