3 gun hunting battery plan
« on: August 15, 2007, 06:23:51 PM »
Well I haven’t used my 3 gun hunting battery plan in a while I would like a little in put first off I would set the situation’s long range box stand 370 yards with a food plot sitting about 190 yards in the brush climbing stand 80 yards 2 trails one at 50 the other at 80. The plan is one long range one short range and one back up to fill in both just in case I’ll sight in with the load mentioned all handload ammo  except the 35 Remington. These have all taken game with the load listed all are as accurate as most on there list the open site guns I try to keep all rounds in a 2.5 inch group and the rest are well under 1.5 inches to .5 inch group. Yes I had to use my back up gun a few times so I put some though in it to fill either roll.

My long range battery consists of

1. 2506 Rem  in a Winchester  M70 with a Leupold  4X12 load is115 grain Nosler partition

2. 270 Win in a Winchester M70 with Simmons Atec 3.5 X 10 load is 140 grain ballistic tip

3. 7 08 Rem in a Browning BBR with a Ziess 3X9 load is 145 grain  Speer hot core

4. 7 Rem Mag in a Savage 110 with a 3 X 9 Simmons load is 154 Hornady spire point interlock

5. 3006  in a Winchester M70 with a 4 X Bushnell load is 165 Hornady spire point interlock

Short range battery consist of

1. 30-30 Winchester 94 Trapper (16 inch barrel) with a receiver site 170 grain Speer round nose

2. 30-30  in a Marlin 336 carbine with a 1.5 X 5 Simmons  load is 170 grain Hornady  flat point

3. 35 Rem in a Remington  M14 with a 2.5 Unertl load is factory 200 grain Remington

4. 357 Mag in a Winchester 94 Trapper with a 1.5 X 5 Tasco with a 180 grain Rem Hp

5. 3006 in a Remington 742 with open factory site load is Hornady 180 grain round nose

List that don’t fit either list ( b/c I say so)

1. 35 Whelen in a Remington 7600 with a 3 X 9 Bushnell load is a 250 spire point Speer Hot Core

2. 308 Win in a Winchester lightweight carbine 1.5 X 5 Simmons load is 165 Hornady spitzer

I have several others but don’t have a current load worked up or in the works I’ll have to go with one of the above would like to here your in put and why you picked that one

Your handle says it all----------you already have the short, medium and long range rifle---the 30-06.

I've got lots of rifles but if I had to go down to three it would be

30-338mag

6mmRem

222

That would take care from elk to varmit shooting

I love these kind of posts, gets you thinking of what works for others, and makes your "wish list" get longer, your wallet thinner, and all that good stuff.

I' m with superhornet, if you've got a M70 in .30-06, you've got a lot of bases covered already, I might put a 2.5X10 Elite 4200 or some other variable with alot of FOV at the bottom end and I'd have a near perfect rig. Between that and your 7-08, .270 and 25-06 you've got a lot of nice rigs set up for what I consider medium range walk around rifles to long range stand hunters.

That being said the 3 I'd pick out of my bunch would be my Winchester M70 Coyote in .300WSM with a Leupold VX-II 3X9 shooting 165grTSX's for my long range stand hunter(doulbles as my elk/mulie rifle); Then my Browning BLR in .308 with Leupold 2X7 in Warne QD mounts with Nosler 150gr Partitions for my walk around rifle; And one of my iron sighted Winchester 94's, either the .375Win, .307 or the good old .30-30 for short range work.

First thing I'd do is move my box stand. You're about 190 yards too far away.  Then I'd get the 30-06 bolt gun with the 4x and be good to go.  The 30-06 auttermatic I'd use for a tomato stake.

Hmm.  If I could only own 3 rifles (I'm assuming we're talking centerfire limitation only else I'd have to rework this to include a .22lr :))

I'd say the best 3 (if you could only have 3) would be:

.223
.30-06
.375 H&H

Ironically, I only own the .30-06 out of the above :).  My personal (sporting) rifles consist of:

Winchester 670 in .225 Winchester
Turkish Mauser in .257 Roberts
Sweish m38 Mauser in 6.5x55 Swede
Savage 110 in .30-06 Springfield
Springfield (Remington Mfg) 1903 in .30-06 Springfield
La Coruna Mauser in 8mm Mauser

Also have a number of original condition milsurps but they don't go out hunting with me :).  And I realize that it is a bit odd for a milsurp collector to have as many "sporterized" rifles as i listed above, but only the Turk was done by me (and it was a $40 rust-bucket with missing parts :)).  The rest I just "saved".   I've a soft spot for sporterized military actions :).

Reason for the above is that all I hunt (with a rifle) is whitetail so I've just not had a need for anything outside of whitetail cartridges :).

Sounds good to me :) Really with the ones you have listed,I'd take the 25-06,270,30-06,all in the M70 and be good to go.That way switching from one to another using the same action,it becomes 2nd nature as far as handling and location of safety.Adjust triggers as close as you can on all three and what a fine battery they would make!

Love it, it's a better gun then the A bolt I think, my gun shoots 7/8 inch to 1 1/4 inch groups with 145 grain Speer hot core and IMR 4064 all year long had it out last week in the heat and it drilled 4 groups that went around a inch

You got one if so tell how it shoots ...................a hunting buddy had one in 06 I wish I would have bought it when he sold the thing it was a tack driver

you could trade in your long-range Ssssaaaaa...... ::) ::) (...rifle by that name!) along with a Winchester on a Model 700 Sendero or Varminter for an excellent chance at a very accurate long-range rig.    then i'd trade in a couple of the short-range rifles for a .350 Remington Mag' in a Remington-made rifle.    lastly i'd buy a Ruger All-Weather for a 'stopper' rifle in one of their heavy calibers as a go-anywhere proposition.    it would be .375 H&H magnum or larger for me.   i don't believe that anybody makes a better all-weather rifle than Ruger.

but, those are just my opinions,

Thanks but no thanks  I could have and bought them but I like the ones I have and yes Ruger does make a fine all weather rifle why didn't you pick the new 375 Ruger round over the 375 H & H ?

for now, and probably for the foreseeable future, i'd expect the .375 H&H cartridge and reloading components to be more available than the newer round.   no, the older iteration isn't necessarily better; but it is probably more available.    that could make a difference if ammo' gets lost, forgotten, or misplaced.

those are my only reasons.    then again, you may want to pick a larger cartridge anyway.

take care,

Based on your write-up looks like you primarily hunt deer....so, from your current crop of rifles here would be my pick for a 3 gun battery.

For long-range I'd take the Leupold  4X12 off your 25/06 and mount it  on your 270 Win M70 w/
140 grain ballistic tip

 For close range I'd use the 7 08 Rem in a Browning BBR with a Ziess 3X9 & 145 grain  Speer hot core  OR...the  308 Win in a Winchester lightweight carbine 1.5 X 5 Simmons w/ 165 Hornady spitzer

My back-up would be the 7 Rem Mag in a Savage 110 with a 3 X 9 Simmons load and 154 Hornady spire point interlock

If I had to choose 3 rifles for all my hunting I would go with

  • For varmits & vermin - .220 Swift w/ Leupold 3.5 x 10 in a sporter barreled bolt rifle or Ruger #1.

My go-to gun for 98% of my big game hunting.  7mm Rem Mag, Remington Alaskan model w/ a 2.5 x 8 Leupold and Boone & Crocket reticule.

For Really Really Big Stuff - Lightweight .375 H & H Magnum bolt gun.  Ive got an Interarms that fills this bill perfectly.  It has express sights, & a 4-power Leuopold w/ quickrelease mounts.

My three gun battery

Remington heavy barrel sps 22-250 Leupold LPS 4.5X14X50
Sako Mannlicher 375H&H Ziess 4 power scope with detach rings
Montana Custom Rifel 308 warbird lazzeroni    Zeiss 4.5X14X44

That is for rifles   IF someone told me I could only use one gun   and only one gun I would buy a Remington 870 pump with field and rifled barrels.
LUCK when preperation meets opportunity.

Lets see....  I'd want a high powered rifle that would kill moose/deer/blk bear as far away as i'd ever shoot at one, a shotgun with choke tubes, and a very accurate 22 lr....   But WAIT!!!!  That's only ONE gun!!!

Now, i have to think on this somemore, let me get back to you on the other two....
