Winchester 1895 carbine
« on: December 08, 2007, 03:30:55 PM »
I've been looking at the Winchester 1895 carbine in 30-06 and was wondering if anyone had a chance to shoot one. What kind of accuracy did you get and did you have any problems with the rifle.
thanks, Dakotamike

While I have never shot it, the wife's father has a 1895 carbine in 06.  Mine is a 30 Gov't.

Even though the 1895 was chambered for the 06 it was not the ideal chambering.  Factory loads proved to be to heavy and the locking locks often peened or set back.

If you are considering an original one make sure to check for this problem.

The Japchesters may or may not have inherited this problem.

The Miroku's have zero probs, with setback.

The new issue Carbine is only cosmetically different than my M1895 .30-06 & .405 rifles.

I don't particularly care for the safeties, nor the "made in Japan" marking, but the Japanese  are decent gunmakers, I have to give 'em that.

Their quality is excellent for this day and time.  They have no problem with setback as the originals did.  Like any other rifle, once you find the load they like, accuracy will be fine.  Get one while you can, their production was limited.
