first camo paint job
« on: August 14, 2007, 04:42:37 AM »
Its not my 22 hornet handi-rifle , its a Marlin model 880 22lr that I picked up for $65.00. was blued and wood but the wood was a bit nasty so I thought for what I payed for it I would try my first camo paint job. this is a real good shooter also. I might try the same paint on my handi 22 hornet.

Nice looking job.  What type of paint did you use?

What kind of preperations did you do ?
what kind of life do you expect to get out the paint ?
the reason i ask is, i put together a little camp gun and was thinking about painting it up , but didnt want to go thru all the mess and hastle if it will just start coming off soon after.
i know my post sounds pestimistic but im not trying to be..lol

There are two threads on painting a rifle in the NEF forum, there are links to both in the FAQs. ;)

All I did was wipe it down real good with alcohol , Then I layed out some newspapers on my tailgate. Started out with gray primer and painted the whole gun. I put a big screwdriver thru the trigger gaurd so I could flip flop it and get both sides. Then I used maple leaves and just layed them on the rifle as I then used Tan, black and red primers. Took a piece of copy paper and made little slits about 1/8 inch by 3 inches. Thats how I got that stick effect. The whole project only took about 4 hours.  as far as how long it will last I dont know, but I think I will just use it and abuse it and see what happens, If it gets nicked and scracthed, just get out the paint again and give it a quick touchup. Give it a try. ! I have always been to fussy about my guns and it drives me crazy, made up my mind that this is going to be my new beater gun. she will go everyware with me, heck at least it wont rust.

Yeah i know about the paint thread in the FAQ's.. i just was looking for one mans opinion on the subject.
i think i'll use parts cleaner instead of alcohol though..
i believe however that the larger the camo pattern the better it wont stand out. so i'm thinking of painting my reciever and barrel a green or tan, and the stocks black and tan.. i dunno for sure still working it out..
anyhow thanks for your insight
