Old Ithaca SxS 20ga. value
« on: June 10, 2007, 03:34:30 AM »
I came across an old Ithaca 20ga. SxS that has double triggers and 28" barrels, extractors only, fluid steel barrels.  From what I could find according to the serial number it is probably an early model (pre- modifications and improvements)1930 or earlier.  I would say it is a feild grade with modest engraving and plain wood, one barrel has a minor dent.  I would say it is 30%-40% condition.  Anyone have an idea of what a fair price would be.  It comes up to shoulder real nice and is solid.  Would make a great field gun.

Guns of the sort are really worth whatever you're willing to pay for it. In that condition it would have no collector value I don't believe and so it's only value is as a shooter. If you want it offer them a bit less than what they are asking and then end up paying what YOU think it's worth to YOU to shoot it. In the end that's really the only way to arrive at a price for such an old gun as book values mean little in such cases. They aren't seen often enough to actually establish a local value.

Thanks for the reply and advice.  Since it would not have any collector value I would work on it to improve the appearance and try to restore it to some degree.  It is very solid and comes up to shoulder very well.  I am starting to think the older guns had different stock dimensions then modern ones.  The older guns seem to point so much better for me.  If I can get it for a reasonable price I will probably get it .  The price tag is $600.00.  Do you think this is in the ball park.  It is a pre- NID gun with serial # in the mid 300.00 range.  Thanks again,   Walt

Not an unreasonable price. As always try to get it reduced but if you "think it's worth that" then it is worth that to you and that's really all that matters.

The older guns did indeed have different stock dimensions that modern guns do. For some folks that's good and for some it's bad. I'm one of those that it's bad for but if it feels good to you and seems to fit the way you want it might be just what you need.
