Which .223 barrel?
« on: May 16, 2007, 07:03:45 PM »

I'm getting ready to take the plunge and was wondering if there has been any difference shown in the accuracy level of the different .223 barrels? Weight doesn't bother me in fact the heavier the better as far as I'm concerned. I guess I'll need to get new hanguards at the same time as well.

                              thanks,

Rusty,

Everything that I've read here says that all of the .223 barrels are accurate.  I recently got a heavy barrel, and i'm still in the process of working up the best load.  Earlier in the week my best group of 5 shots was 7/8 inch at 100 yards with 4 of those shots in 5/8 inch.

The only things I've done to the rifle is bed the fore stock ('O' ring trick) and polish the bore with Flitz to shorten the breakin period.

Which ever you pick I think you'll be satisfied.

I agree with Roudy, all of them are pretty good shooters.
If you can afford it though, get the 24" Ultra barrel.
Best in my opinion.

Would that be the Stainless barrel or the blue steel?

If my name was Rusty, I'd go stainless.  ;D

LOL no doubt ;D

But anyway, there is no stainless bull barreled 223 offered, only 22-250.
But there are 3 different bull barreled offerings for the 223 Handi.
- 22"
- 24" Ultra
- 24" Ultra, fluted barrel

And if you want to get technical and see all your choices.... then...
-20" lightweight barrel, with open sights
-20" lightweight barrel with no open sights, scope rail
-22" standard contour, blue
-22" standard contour, stainless
-22" BB
-24" Ultra BB
-24" Ultra fluted BB

Lots of choices for a man looking for a 223 Handi 8)

I had a 22'' bull barrel in the 223 and it shot great. Every time out it would shoot 3/4'' or less at 100 yards using Winchester white box 45 gr JHP. I wish I would have never sold that barrel. When I get another I would get the 24'' bull just for the simple fact that you will gain a little in velocity with the extra couple inches of barrel. ;D ;D ;D

OK, so the 24" ultra is the bull barrel.

Thanks, that's what I was thinking.

BTW, even stainless rusts down here if not tended to.
