cz550 270 - help with load info \ COL
« on: June 26, 2007, 04:40:40 AM »
I am getting good enough for deer hunting groups using 130 grain hornady SPBT and IMR 4350. I tried one load of H4831 SC - nothing to write home about - but only one load. Looking to shrink the groups a bit - thinking of going to a mag primer - any thoughts?? Also thinking of going to Sierra 140 hpbt's. I am hoping someone can share a sweet spot for the COL and a really good load for the Hodgden powder.  My Hodgden load was 59 grain and seated close as I could get it.  Any advice on where to go frome here?  Many tout 60grains but that is getting stout- will 1grain make much difference? Much obliged

Well I would love to give you a COL for your rifle. However as I have never seen your rifle I cannot do so. All rifles are slightly different and the COL for mine may not be the same for yours. Heck the COL accepted by your magazine may not be the same for the chamber. Your going to have to figure this out for yourself with your rifle. Failing that consult a knowledgeable friend or handloader who can inspect the actual rifle.

I suggest that you work with H4831 or the SC version.  A few months ago I dug out a box of .270 ammunition that loaded in the early 70's.  My label said accurate.  I know at that time I load lots of 130 grain C-L pushed by 59 grains of surplus (H)4831.   After 30 years the loads were still good for very good groups.  With the same load I had a little shooting contest with a couple city guys and their new shiny M742.  They looked down their nose at my older M760, but in the end they picked-up and left.

I'll note the load worked great in hot weather and sub-freezing weather in Colorado.

When I bought a Savage 110 in .270 I jumped the charge to 60 grains of H4831 pushing 130 grain Hornady SP, and the Remington C-L.

Brithunter - I know .  Just wanting to check mine against someone else - for a feel good. Think I will back off a few 1/100ths to match another load with different powder but better results.   Siskiyou.  I tried 59 grains h 4381sc and wasn't too thrilled.  Not giving up on that powder because....well...I already bought it  :) =-and it was only one load so far.  Going to try another at 60gr -but that is as I high as  I go, and have one ready at 58 and will see where i trend.

I have had very good results with two other powders in the .270 Win.  and I hang onto the powder like a fine wine because they cannot be found anymore, otherwise I would have suggested WW785, and WMR powders. Great to work with and create small groups, and generate top velocity.  If I was to start on a new powder for the .270 Winchester I would experiment with Magpro for 130/140 grain bullets.  I agree with your earlier findings that 4350 is a good .270 powder.

I am locked into H4831 with 150 grain bullets because of good accuracy and very dead deer.
