Who makes over-sized laminated wood stock blanks?
« on: May 22, 2003, 05:40:09 AM »
I am making Ferguson rifles. Thickness at breech requires stock blank to be at least .250 inch thicker -- about 2.750 inches thick minimum.

Who makes laminated rifle stock blanks this thick?

More particulars include:

1. I prefer more than 16 laminations per inch.

2. I prefer laminated walnut or laminated maple. The last time I did this I used laminated birch because that was all I could find at 2.750 inches thick.

3. I prefer not to mix woods in a Zebra effect. Results wanted are that the finished and stained stock closely resembles walnut.

There is an outfit called (I think) 'Acrabond'.  They make blanks using a core of plain walnut and higher grade outer layers.  A bit more than the average laminate but guite beautiful.  Please note that there are only a few companies that actually 'make' the laminated blanks.  Most of the gunstock companies buy from them and just machine them.  Have you tried--  Elk Ridge Gunstocks.  They seem pretty accomidating and make sone interesting laminate combinations.  Give them a call and ask if they call produce what you require.  Let us know how you make out.
