What to do with a lh Weatherby 240
« on: June 20, 2007, 08:26:47 PM »
Been looking for a nice left hand bolt rifle for a while.  Came across a good deal on an older Weatherby, only problem it's chambered in 240 Weatherby.   Wouldn't mind a 257 Weatherby but the darn brass is a buck a piece.  Wonder if I could get it re-barreled in 257 Rob, 25-06 or maybe something in 6.5mm.

The 240 Wthby is a fine cartridge. Great velocity, good accuracy and a bit of a curio. Read the article in Ken Waters pet loads book if you want some more info on the round. I would leave it as is, but that is just me. As far as re barreling I don't know if the action length will accommodate the 257. If I remember correctly the 240 is quite a bit shorter than the 257 and I think (I might be wrong) but the 240 lenght action is not long enough. I re barreled a Rem 700 lh from 7mm mag to 257 Weatherby and that conversion worked well. If you feel the need I could liberate the 240 for you ;).
Ignorance and motivation are a horrible combination

I have a Weatherby 240.  The action is the standard Weatherby that would take any length cartridge.  They don't have short and long like some do.  It would be setup for anything in the 30-06 case length  as it is, including the correct magazine box.  The cases are expensive but may be able to do a search and find some once fired stuff.   The 240 is a fine cartridge in it's own right and should do very well on deer as it is.
