The 444 max weight bullet?
« on: April 23, 2007, 03:21:55 PM »
I believe I read that the 444 Marlin barrel is 1-20 twist, if so what is the heaviest weight bullet it will stabilize, in theory?

Midway has them all the up to 520gr in that dia.  I'm thinking of a 444 barrel to suppliment my 38-55, just because it's different, plus I already have a 44 Mag rifle (winchester)

The 45-70 is also a 1:20", it stabilizes 555gr good, I would expect at least a 500gr .44 cal bullet to stabilize, but 405gr is the biggest I've seen in .432". Groove to groove diameter is .4308" on the new barrels, so ideally, the bullets need to be ~.432" or so for best accuracy.  I've got 250gr and 355gr gas checked ordered from Beartooth, they must need to run them, cuz I ordered them a month ago and still don't have em!! Midway doesn't have anything in cast that would be suitable to shoot in a .444, I checked them out already.

They have a Montana Precision 350gr made for paper patching, it's .422 located here.

They have two smaller sizes as well.  Will have to do some more research to see what is available.  I misspoke about the 520gr it's a .440 dia.
