Problem with replacement hubbard rod
« on: April 10, 2007, 06:14:29 AM »
I picked one up awhile ago and I tried to put it in its place on my 58 huntsman (I showed the pictures of it a few posts back).  It was hard getting it in and almost impossible to get out.  I know I put the right end in first ;)  When I checked the base of the rod the finish was almost taken off at the base.  What can I do to make a better fit?  The rod that it came with was a home made one with a 44mag case on one end and a 38 special on the other.  That one is also hard to get out. I like to head out in the woods with only one rod, and I don't want to carry it with me.  Thanks everyone for your comments :)

It sounds like someone messed with the retention device to make the other makeshift rod work. I would check that and see if you cannot bend the retainer until you get the correct retention. My Huntsman had the stock rod and when I replaced it with the Hubbard rod it was perfect. Not sure what you meant by the "finish was almost removed" the Hubbard rod is solid brass and does not have any finish.

I guess I was to busy typing and not reading my words ;)  It came out so hard that the brass has hard markings on it.  Like something else rubbed over on the brass rod.  What would be the most easy way to take care of this problem?  That front ring is brass, so I don't know how easy it would be to remove.

"Front ring is brass" what does that refer to? Are you saying that you want to remove the end of the Hubbard rod? I am still at a loss to understand your problem. My Huntsman has a steel spring like device in the forend that controls how much tension is on the rod when stored. I think this is what needs to be addressed. Maybe you have one of the old Huntsman rifles that had a brass ring holding the forend on (I saw a picture of one of those once but have never seen one in person). I am still confused although several people have told me that I get confused more now that I am over 65. Still willing to help if I can get the problem understood.

A few posts down on this thread it is called "just wanted to share" that is the pics of my 58cal.    The rod comes in and out fine until the last inch or two when it is all the way in.  When I push the rod all the way in, which I have to, it is very hard to pull the rod out.  I hope this makes sense.  I have been know to ramble and not make sense :)

Yep; that was the picture I was referring to with the brass ring holding the forend on the barrel. Is there a screw in the forend also like all the other Huntsman rifles that do not have the brass ring? There must be a way to remove the ring or you could not get the barrel off the action. I think you would find the retention device is just adjusted too tight and could be bent to allow the rod to have less pressure on the retention. Maybe someone else that has a similar dressed rifle with the brass ring can help. If you can get the brass ring off I would try adjusting the tension and reinstall without the ring until you are sure that you have it correct then reassemble with the ring. I am assuming that the screw is there to hold the forend on.
