tohatsu outboard motors opinions
« on: February 25, 2003, 06:33:07 AM »
howdy- anybody here own a tohatsu (sp) outboard motor or have you known anyone who does. i'm planning on a new (or used boat) this year and i want a new motor on it.
the scoop i got from a boat mauf (he does not deal in motors but he has this on his rig) is that it is the oldest outboard manuf in japan. he likes it because it is a no-frills outboard-he said it just works.

I see nobody has bothered to answer your very genuine question.  Truth is I don't have a very good answer but I will share what I do know.  About 10 years ago there was a Tohatsu dealer(no longer in business) near here who claimed to like them and it was his opinion they were relatively trouble free.

My opinion is that service/parts are not easily available in my area, there are plenty of used JohnRudes, Mercury/Mariners available so why bother.  The second point is once you own it you may want to sell it at some point and that may not be easy. I would stick to the "name" brands were I you.  Good Luck.

All I know is in Louisiana most of the trawlers and crabbers who use the hell out of a motor seem to sport Suzukie 4 stroke.  I asked a coupe why, they look at you and say "why do you think.  wait to get the double warantee that they give out every year.
