Greetings,

have reacently started looking at getting a Centerfire bolt gun in the near future (actually hope to get two by end of year). and have due to past and reacent experience decided to most likely go with a Savage...

what i am looking for is a better idea of what i SHOULD be paying for the gun(s) in question. (Note the letters in the brackets are interchangeable under Savage's notation system F=synthetic stock and G=wood stock) specifically the models 11(G/F) NS (the sporter version with no sights) , 10FP (target/varmint gun, used to be called the "tactical")

and the

10GXP3, and 11FXP3 "package guns"

i really have no Idea what these guns are going for in "the real world" and would appreciate any help those of you who know can give me. b/c i don't want to get skinned only to find out i could have gotten what i wanted for less1 (i'm on a budget)

Detritus:  the savage 11-g 100% $335 the 11f 100% $350/ the 10fp 100% $390 , all these prices were taken out of the blue book of values and go downward quickly depending on condition. :D   JIM

About 9 months ago I paid $390 for a new Model 12 FVXP in .22-250 that came with a simmons scope ( 4 - 12).   Hope that helps.

This is what someone had to say on another forum:

The Tikkas are great rifles, but for the price, you can't beat a Savage. They are very accurate, low priced, and with this new trigger they've come out with, they will be hard to beat at any price. They may look a bit odd, but they do shoot great. Just don't get the combo package as the scope is not that good.

I agree.  I do love Tikkas, but I do realize that cost can sometimes be a very important factor to many people.  As such, although I do not like the overall feel, and fit and finish of the Savage rifles (as I believe the quality to be below par and the bolt action to be sloppy) there is no denying that Savage rifles, for whatever reason, are generally very accurate.

However, I too agree that the scope on Savage's combo packages leave much to be desired.  Since this is your first centerfire rifle, I would simply buy just the rifle and buy the scope separately.  

Please, Please, Please keep in mind that, with optics, you get what you pay for.  However, since cost is obviously a consideration for you, I would recommend, at the very least, the Bushnell Trophy.  If you can afford a little more, take a look at either the Bushnell Elite 3200 or Nikon Buckmasters.  You would be much happier with these scopes, especially the 3200!

actually it's not....  i'm going with Savage b/c i had a great experience with a 110FP in .223,  that was the first gun i ever bought.  i also have owned a few other centerfire rifles, but they've all been traded away or sold for various reasons.  the last two (the 110FP and a remington 600 in .308) went to cover the last bit of an outstanding medical bill for my step-daughter (i got laid off in Oct and my wife's salry, didn't quite cover that bill AND food/shelter)


my interest in the package guns is mainly b/c for a while they were common in the cases at the local Wal-marts,  and with a complete package i can start shooting Immeadiately, instead of buying a rifle then havint to wait while i shop for the scope i REALLY.   my mind works weird, if i have to buy them seperate i'm liable to nit pick the scope and not shoot till i get the one i REALLY one.  if i get the package gun i'll shoot and get the gun broken in and get used to any quirks etc the gun has, while shopping around for that "just right" scope for it.

This is just a thougth and I am not knocking Savage at all. But you might look at Wally-Word for the Vangard wethreby(spelling should be ignored)
this is made by Howa and my dealings with Howa rifles has been great and the price is right. Just a idea if money is tight. Good luck.

Personally, I wouldn't go below Bushnell's Trophy line, and would actually recommend the Elite 3200.

I bought one -2yrs ago. Touted as out of the box tac driver. Well you have to be able to shoot. I am very happy with mine. It started out with 1" groups at 100yds. The new ones have the improved trigger, which will help. They are ugly, action is like a bad coffee grinder, but they will shoot. All this for under $400. When I go out to the range every one wants to try it(223). The 308 should be as good.
