Micro grove barrels?
« on: April 20, 2007, 09:23:15 AM »
I am looking for a 30-30,  but don't want a micro grove barrel!  Is it true that all new H&Rs have these barrels,  & if true when was this change made?

H&R doesn't use micro groove rifling, it's just button rifled real shallow, as shallow as  .002" deep. Except for the new .444 Marlin barrels which are broach rifled.

Hi Zooly:

Why not get a 45-70? It will do all that the 30-30 will do(with the same recoil or less) and I believe it has the rifling cut/broached. Accurate too I am told. And from first hand knowledge it is easy to reload.

Help us on this one Tim.

Button rifled like the rest. The old Shikari had ballard rifling, but that's a thing of the past.

So does that suggest they will wear out faster in hot rod varmint calibers?

The 45-70 is way to big for what I want to do, which is a mock, low bucks .300 Whisper in a Handy.  I know i it's limited by the 1:10 twist but a 150 gr, soft,  PB cast bullet @ 1000 fps should be quiet, cheap & fun to shoot.  The 7.62X39 would also work but I have dies for the the 30-30.

There are a few folks here that shoot low velocity cast bullets in their 30-30s, here's an old thread on the topic.

Greg Mushial has some low velocity cast data on his web site...

Thanks Tim.  I have some loading data from an old ( 1980) "Fouling Shot" using Winchester 231, I want to try.
